Empty set - Wikipedia
February 4, 2026 - As a result, there can be only one set with no elements, hence the usage of "the empty set" rather than "an empty set". The only subset of the empty set is the empty set itself; equivalently, the power set of the empty set is the set containing only the empty set.
The number of non-empty subsets of the set {1, 2, 3, 4} onA. 14B. 15C. 16D. 17
The above set is a finite set because it contains only a finite number of elements and we know that there are exactly four elements in the set. We have to find the subsets of the given set which must be non empty in nature which means that none of the elements must not be null or ฯ. More on vedantu.com

[linear algebra] What does a nonempty subset mean?
Nonempty means there is at least one object in the set. The vector (0,0,0) is an object in the set. So the set is nonempty. In the case of your other example, the vector (0,0,36) is an object in the set, so that set is also nonempty. More on reddit.com

Reading a book that says if A and B are disjoint, then neither is a subset of the other unless one is the empty set. I thought 'Isn't it impossible to be disjoint with the empty set since it's in every set?' but then I realised it's a subset of every set, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's an element. I'm not sure what this implies though, or I feel like I don't really understand the thought I just had or know if it's even correct

We say A is a subset of B iff for all a in A, a is in B. We also say that A is a proper/strict subset of B iff A is a subset of B and A โ B. By this definition itโs easy to see that given any set X, {} is a subset: indeed, for all x in {}, x is in X (this is vacuously true). However, {} is not an element of every set. It shouldnโt be too difficult to think of examples where this is the case!

The empty set is the set which contains no elements in it. Examples of the empty set are A = { x : x was a U.S. president who stepped foot on the moon } B = { x : x is an even prime number and x>3 } C = { (x*1,0,x3) : x1=4+x1, x3*โโ } There are no elements in any of the above sets, and hence they are empty. If a set contains at least one element (such as (0,0,0)) then it is nonempty. Many of the theorems you encounter will call for a nonempty set as one of the conditions; this ensures that we can speak of some thing in the set without having to worry about whether or not such a thing exists.
