Context I have always heard of Open Box is a great especially if it’s grated as Excellent so I went to Best Buy to get a OLED monitor Open Box and then when I got home hooked it up I saw the most discoloration and burn mark on screen. So I return it for exchange had to go to a different Best Buy Location for the exchange. When I was able to I asked the employee to check for me so it doesn’t happen again since this location was a farther location. He just turned it on and said it was good, I told him can he plug in a HDMI or something to double check but he refused. So had to drive back home to install it again just to have it the same issue but not as serve as the last one but this frustrated me more cause I feel like Best Buy doesn’t check the product. And all they can do is just offer you a return and suggest to buy a brand new one at this point which was $700 more. That whole experience felt scummy likely the pushed me to get the expensive item and only offered me $100 off my inconvenience. Just want to vent that out of my experience and see if anyone has something similar

Basically I came across this device on bestbuy's website and the deal looks too good to be true. So, i have 2 questions to ask

  1. Is this a great deal?

  2. Is it safe to buy open box from bestbuy? Can anyone share their experience if they have purchased an open box from bestbuy before? Are they reliable?

This would be Bestbuy Canada since im from Canada Link to the product -

Use to work at Best Buy. Open Box is items that are returns and are allowed to be resold (some items can’t like earbuds, etc). Returns are Best Buy are 14-days and use to 45-day for Best Buy members who spent over $3,000 a year. Now returns have changed to be a little longer than 45-day but you pay for their Total Tech Membership. I no longer work there so I don’t know the specifics. So, returns are items that are normally lightly touched. I have bought MacBook Open-box, in 2018, and it is still great. I have bought Apple products, phone (1 time), TV, and accessories like cables all as open-box. If you see a non-Apple Open box item on a deep discount there could be three reasons (that come to mind). It is on sale already, so the open-box is discounted as well. There are cosmetic issues with the product. Dents and scratches. This specific item has been returned before, purchased as Open-box, and returned again. Therefore, it goes on open-box again. Don’t get scared by #3, you wouldn’t know anyway. People return shit literally same day or next day all the time. It is more common than you may think. You can return open-box items, so you can test it out and verify if it meets your expectations. Edit: if warranties are available on that specific item, an open-box item will also be able to get that warranty

Though it was worth a shot to save $115 on an X with an open box. Like often recommended I opened at the store to make sure it looked good and it did. However I made the mistake of not turning it on. I got home then turned it on and let it update. I left the room briefly only to hear the sound of a dying cow groaning behind me. Once I set it up even in idle "Silent" mode it was very audible. I don't know if this horrible coin whine or bad bearings or what.

I returned it and just bought a brand new one which is far quieter and no groan. Best Buy didn't give me a hard time but the employee didn't appear to take note of why I returned it. Hopefully they don't try to sell it again.

Has anyone had a good experience with Best Buy open box?

I'm hesitant to buy anything "open box" but my local best buy has an excellent condition Bravia 9 75" for $2400. If I add 5 years protection it would be $3100.

Was torn between this and an LG G5/C5.

UPDATE:

I went to best buy and they told me it was returned after 1 day due to him preferring an LG OLED but it's in Mint condition. They were willing to knock off another $100.

Only issue with the Bravia 9 when I was looking at it in the store is that there seemed to be a rainbow effect when lights were hitting it which I'm now concerned with the high hats. So now I'm unsure.

Thanks everyone for the help!

r/pcmasterrace on Reddit: Best Buy open box strikes again

Practically stole a 5080 prebuilt from Best buy last week... Story time.

Went in to spend a $25 rewards certificate I had. While walking around debating what to waste my $ on I saw this Black ROG box in the open-box area and took a quick peek at the specs.

265kf/5080/32gb 6000/2tb/b860m/240aio/case 6rgb fans/850w psu etc

Thought $1375.85 seemed like an oddly specific number to have something marked down to but I didn't really need an upgrade (old rig was a 5950x/3090kingpin build) so I moved on. Then went home and curiosity got me. All the open box for this PC were $2300+ and new was $2750.

Went back the next day and convinced myself(using boy math) that it was almost a poor financial decision not to buy it. So I did...much to my gf's dismay. 🤣

Got it home and it wouldn't boot. Lit up but no picture. Poked around. Reseated things. Eventually found what looked like shipping damage causing the 5080 to not seat 100%. The pcie mount bracket was slightly bent and the locking tab on the mobo was busted off (much more then the non-existent "scratches" listed on the open box sticker. Manually persuaded the bent case tab back into submisson, which allowed the card to fully seat into the pcie slot and bobs your uncle I was in business. Everything worked exactly as it should.

Figured it couldn't hurt to return to Best buy and talk to a manager about their "fully working" open box items to see if I could get a few more dollars off. She clickyclacked away for a few minutes and then did some math on her phone. She told me that "1375.85" was the lowest the system would even let her put an open box version of that and I should return it if I was unsatisfied. Obviously an aesthetic issue at this point was not going to cause me to return it.

Proceeded to move some of my storage to it from old rig and then found a 9100 4tb for $200 locally. Next I decided to swap cases because I couldn't stand the mega-gamer-bro aesthetic of the ROG case(and it had so much wasted space being a matx board) so picked up a new Lian Li a3 off marketplace for $40 and completed the parts swap over last night.

Can't complain about a "free" upgrade (once I sell the old rig). All in I'm about $1700 into a $3400ish build (according to PC parts picker and some guesstimation https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fKRj8Q)

Tldr: purchased 5080/265kf/32gb/2tb build for $1375 from Best buy. Small damage to motherboard and case bens made GPU not seat in pcie slot. Fixed case bend and everything works! Transplanted all guts into Lian Li a3 case for aesthetics.

Hi so I'm thinking about buying a computer on best buy and it's like half the price which is suspicious but I have gotten things open box excellent before and its worked out. It says Geek Squad Verified and it's sold by best buy. I don't want to spend money only for it not to work out tho. Any suggestions on how to verify it's good or for when I'm in store?

Edit: thanks for all the advice guys! I ended up going in person and checking out the open box computer, it ended up not turning on. So ended up buying another computer which I love and works very well!

Just picked this bad boy up! I hope the condition really does reflect “excellent” but we will see…

Pretty excited!

What’s the best first game to play for someone who has never even tried VR before for the greatest “wow” experience?

PS - Anyone picking one up, don't forget to check your cashback apps. I forgot to add, with mine there is an additional 10% back at Best Buy today so getting $15 off the marked price as well.

Just do it. Go check it out in person before you buy it obviously. I just got an unbelievable deal on 65" a80l.

Was listed on site as good quality at 1300 so I decided to check it out. I get there and apparently it was ready for an order for pick up but the person never came to pick it up.

They somehow lost the original box (which was kind of odd) but I was chopping it up with the dude and he offered to get me a better price. Called his manager over, did his thing, came back and said he could give it to me for $1000.

Tried not to get too excited but I nearly ejaculated at the thought. They brought it over and looked it over. No scratches, no scuffs, everything is in the box. They told me I have 2 weeks for return so I got nothing to lose, pulled the trigger and wrang it up. Just couldn't boot it up in store, so when I got home checked the screen hours and it only had 15 mins.

It's been 2 weeks, just managed to dial in my settings and I could not be happier.

FYI I’ve gotten really great deals from Best Buy open box..

Most recently I purchased an open box excellent 49” Samsung Odyssey OLED G9. It still had all the peels on it. The cables (DP and HDMI) were still tightly wrapped with the brown paper SAMSUNG cable ties, which have to be torn for the cables to be used, so they were clearly never used. per smart things all, the monitor had 9 hours of panel time, so practically brand new.

There was a note in the box from the return saying “monitor shuts off”. Now, I’m no expert- but I know enough to know that if you don’t use a high bandwidth cable with these monitors they will, indeed blank out and the monitor would appear to “turn off”.

TLDR: I saved $220 off the current sale price because some moron didn’t use the cables that came with the monitor. It’s on sale for $1079, I took a chance and got it basically brand new for $858. Now that I know I’m keeping it, I will be going back to add the 4 year geek squad warranty.

Just my experience I thought I would share.

Just wanted to vent a little.

Went to bestbuy online and saw a great deal on the new LG 5k2k monitor, open box, inspected by Geek squad to be excellent condition. I purchased it online and drove about 30 miles to pick it up

Once I get there to pick it up, I asked them to open the box so we can inspect it to verify its all good. Box gets opened, looks a bit dirty and box shredded. I immediately notice the stand is the wrong one, and they tried to reassure me it was the correct stand (It was last years model) --- then I verified the model number, and it was infact last years OLED model, that had lower resolution. After all that, I got a return, and got a "we're sorry", and thats it. Wasted time, gas, patience.

"Geek squad verified" -- what a joke. How can they say they verified it, when it was literally the wrong monitor in the box? Clearly the person who returned it, kept the newer model and returned his old one.
