As in:
“Joe suspected that Paul had purposely (purposefully?) tripped him in the hallway, even though Paul claimed it was an accident.”
Which word is right? Or can it be both?
Top answer 1 of 11

Purposely means on purpose, purposefully means with purpose

Purposefully to me doesn’t just mean ‘on purpose,’ it’s doing something in a purposeful manner, methodically, intentionally: in a way that makes it really obvious that you know what you’re doing. Purposely has never felt right to me either, since adding -ly to a noun generally creates an adjective (like friendly or manly), not an adverb. I generally avoid the question by using on purpose or deliberately instead.

July 27, 2023 - It is well known that Darwin’s magnum opus, On the Origin of Species, was a direct response to Paley’s Natural Theology. Darwin’s mechanism of natural selection offered a way in which nature could form purpose-directed organisms through a gradual process that had no ultimate purpose in mind, apart from mating and survival.
