Thoughts on using the Patagonia Black Hole Pack 32L
Just took it it to NYC for a week. A top loader suits me just fine. Everything comes out when I get to a place anyways and anything I need access to in transit stays near the top. I find that a clamshell is like a suitcase in that if you don't have lots of room where you are staying it can actually be more difficult to use. I find a toploader easier to pack in some ways. Just stand it up and put things in in the right order. I like the size of the top pocket. It's big enough to be very useful but not so big that you can't find stuff. I find it packs as much as a typical 32L in a more compact size. It has no bells and whistles so this saves on weight and I didn't find it cumbersome taking NYC transit with it. It's no bigger in dimensions than a typical daypack but fits as much or more than other 32L packs I have. I don't think there are many other choices at this volume at this weight. I also considered the Thule Subterra 34 that weighs more. More on reddit.com
