I have both - the down sweater will be much warmer, the nano puff will breath better for being active. I’d make the decision based on your climate. If you have real cold winter weather or run a bit cool, I wouldn’t expect the Nano Puff to keep you warm enough without a cold weather specific layering system under it and even then, you might want more warmth. If you want more versatility in the clothes you wear under it and need to stay warmer in cold weather, I’d go with the down sweater. I view my nano as more of a fall/spring layer for my climate. Edit: don’t pick the nano puff for breathability. The difference between the down sweater and nano puff is probably negligible in that category. More on reddit.com

I have one and it's great, plus Patagonia has one of the best programs for returns / wear and tear out there. Super light but incredibly warm and easy to layer. No, you won't have to buy one every couple years just from regular urban use, but if you plan to go camping and hiking in it, I'd get an outer shell to go over it so it doesn't tear on thorns, brambles, etc. More on reddit.com

Washing the jacket before use: They suggested washing it to "soften" the goose down, which might help reduce shedding.

Looking for a lightweight jacket and can’t decide between the nano puff or down sweater jacket.
Will be using it for casual wear around city.
I do like the flat/matt finish if Arcteryx atom but I picked one up on sale the wrong size and it’s a bit too snug.
Open to Patagonia or other brands.

I have a $300 store credit after I returned my down sweater. The down sweater was warm enough, but is there anything warmer that Patagonia sells that also does not have an outside which will rip as easily as the thin skin on the down sweater?
I live in Fairbanks, Alaska, and I just want the warmest thing possible. I was fine last winter wearing long johns+waffles+thick wool sweater+down sweater, but after about 5 hours outside, I could feel the cold seeping in. That was at -20 F. My setup has worked down to -65 F, but only for 30 min.
My budget is around $500.
I'm asking here since Patagonia does not have temperature ratings, and I don't know how things compare to the down sweater which I used to own.
Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

I bought a 3 in 1. Maybe look at reviews for that. I haven't worn it yet...waiting for the -40C of alberta. Although I'm only outside for a max of 30 minutes at a time.
