i received a letter last week from PennDOT saying that my PA license (that i’ve had for almost 3 years now after previously being a resident of NY) will not be automatically renewed because my driving privilege has been withdrawn in New York State. i have no reason to believe this would be the case at all - have no tickets or arrests on my record at all, and my car is titled and registered in PA through all the proper channels, and i had no issues obtaining a PA drivers license. my family has not received any mail from the NYS DMV stating anything like this. the letter goes on to say that PennDOT does not have further information on this and that i need to reach out to the NYS DMV.
is this a legitimate notice? it just seems so random and doesn’t make sense to me.

Yes it is, sadly. I got a ticket in a speed trap in Maryland back in ‘11. I was 6 over the limit in a group of cars all going the same speed. I figure I was the only one with an out of state plate. Stupid ticket. To make things worse I was on my way back here to PA to drop off my family before I deployed to Afghanistan for a year. I had a week till I flew out, so I just paid the stupid ticket. I was so pissed. Fast forward to 2020 and I retire from the military and my military exempt status for drivers license renewal expires. I go to get a new one for the first time in nearly 15 years only to find they won’t because of an “outstanding ticket in Maryland”. I told them I had paid it years ago and they demand a pay slip - from 2011. Of course I don’t have it. This leads to a thousand phone calls to the Maryland police department in the tiny town I got the ticket in, their county court house and the PA DMV - during COVID lockdowns. It got so bad I had to have my local State Rep get involved. The end result is Maryland DMV was in a big hurry to let PA DMV know I got a ticket, but not to let them know I ever paid the damn thing. Had to get a copy of the cashed check from the bank and a faxed letter from the local Maryland court house saying it had been paid in full. Took 3 months to get it all resolved. HUGE PAIN IN MY ASS for a speed trap ticket.
