GitHub - yngvem/python-project-structure: An outdated tutorial on how to manage a Python project Β· GitHub
In this part of the tutorial, I hope to show you a way to initate any Python project to ensure that you won't have to do major effort restructuring the code once you want to publish it. Let us start with the folder layout. Your project directory should be structured in the following way and we will explain why later. project_name β”œβ”€β”€ docs β”‚ β”œβ”€β”€ make.bat β”‚ β”œβ”€β”€ Makefile β”‚ └── source β”‚ β”œβ”€β”€ conf.py β”‚ └── index.rst β”œβ”€β”€ examples β”‚ └── example.py β”œβ”€β”€ src β”‚ └── package_name β”‚ └── __init__.py β”œβ”€β”€ tests β”‚ └── __init__.py β”œβ”€β”€ .gitignore β”œβ”€β”€ LICENSE.txt β”œβ”€β”€ MANIFEST.in β”œβ”€β”€ README.rst β”œβ”€β”€ requirements.txt β”œβ”€β”€ setup.cfg β”œβ”€β”€ setup.py └── tox.ini

The dedicated src directory is the recommended solution by pytest when using Nox and the solution this blueprint promotes because it is the least brittle even though it deviates from the traditional Python project structure.

You should examine the files here, decide which are right for you, and adapt them to your needs. This directory is where you put your code. It should have one subdirectory named for your project, and all of your work goes into that subdirectory.

I used to recommend reStructuredText for READMEs in contrast to Markdown but PyPI no longer requires reStructuredText. You can use Markdown as noted on https://pypi.org/help/ under "How can I upload a project description in a different format?". Example shown here: https://packaging.python.org/tutorials/packaging-projects/#creating-setup-py

Structuring Your Project β€” The Hitchhiker's Guide to Python
Thanks to the way imports and modules are handled in Python, it is relatively easy to structure a Python project. Easy, here, means that you do not have many constraints and that the module importing model is easy to grasp.

Organize source by feature [15], for example \./src/foo/(template|view|model)\..*, rather than by source type, for example \./src/(templates|views|models)/foo\..*. Add a VCS remote for this repository to a real project. When the template adds structure specific to certain types of projects, for example command-line tools, web services, UI apps, the it adds branches for each variant.

Ravioli code is more likely in ... proper structure. If you never can remember, if you have to use FurnitureTable, AssetTable or Table, or even TableNew for your task at hand, then you might be swimming in ravioli code. Python modules are one of the main abstraction layers available and probably the most natural one. Abstraction layers allow separating code into parts holding related data and functionality. For example, a layer of a project can handle ...

I’ve adapted this from Jean-Paul Calderone’s classic structure post, and his prescriptions for the use of a bin/ directory are still important. The most important point to remember is that your executable shouldn’t have a lot of code, just an import and a call to a main function in your runner script. If you are using pure Python ...

The project template provides you with following features: All configuration can be done in setup.cfg like changing the description, URL, classifiers, installation requirements and so on as defined by setuptools. That means in most cases it is not necessary to tamper with setup.py. In order to build a source or wheel distribution, just run tox -e build (if you don't use tox, you can also install build and run python -m build).
