Why is qualitative research looked down upon in academia?
There is a deep bias/assumption that qualitative research is fundamentally subjective, which goes against psychology's drive for objectivity. And many people falsely assume quantitative is always objective. More on reddit.com
Question regarding Qualitative Research Method (Case Study & Interview)
Hey I have a master degree in sociology and social research and am currently doing a PhD in data science so I hope I can help! :) methodology refers exclusively to the techniques you will be using in your analysis i.e. ethnomethodolgy, text mining etc. Case study is a type of study and not a technique :) I think you could proceed as follow 1.address the general topic like the market you are interested in 2. Define a clear research question 3. Define what techniques you will use 4. Collect data accordingly. To find a suitable technique and method you should ask yourself what the scope of your paper is, what you want to achieve, how can you treat the data structures you will create. Maybe if you give more details I can give my humble suggestion to help you find a good method. More on reddit.com

September 18, 2022 - Qualitative research is a type of research that explores and provides deeper insights into real-world problems.[1] Instead of collecting numerical data points or intervening or introducing treatments, just like in quantitative research, qualitative research helps generate hypotheses to further investigate and understand quantitative data.

How different are qualitative and quantitative research?
Quantitative research can tell us which brands of jam people like best by using sales figures as data. If that is all you need to know, then quantitative research is enough. But if you want to know why a top brand sells so well, qualitative research can help you to answer questions such as: is the flavour of the jam the most important factor?

Quantitative research methods are methods that are based on empirical numerical data (quantities). These are used more often in the hard sciences like physics and chemistry but are also used in the social sciences like sociology. If your research methods have to do with measuring numbers and figures, it's probably quantitative. Qualitative research methods are based on describing behaviors and experiences (qualities). These are primarily used in the humanities and social sciences (for example, anthropology and history use a lot of qualitative methods). Examples of qualitative methods include ethnography and critical analysis - in both cases, you're looking at something and describing what's happening.

Quantitative research is very well suited to establishing cause-and-effect relationships, to testing hypotheses and to determining the opinions, attitudes and practices of a large population, whereas qualitative research lends itself very well to developing hypotheses and theories and to describing processes such as decision making or communication processes.

I am doing applied statistics and haven’t found any easy to understand definitions for qualitative and quantitative variables, and maybe some other terms as well. There aren’t any easy definitions in the college text book either. I am really falling behind in class.
Are you able to give me an easy definition?
What are resources that teach applied statistics in an easy to understand manner? Perhaps with laymen terms or a plain speaking manner.

In terms of statistics, qualitative data are things where our numbers are arbitrary and have no “mathematical value” For example, I ask about favorite colors and make it so Blue = 1 Red = 2 Green = 3 I COULD try to do 3 + 1 here, but that makes no sense because Green + Blue makes no sense. This is qualitative data in the stats class context. It’s another term talking about categorical or nominal data. I suggest you use khan academy to help you with practice problems and tutorial videos. If you’re really struggling with intro stats, it’ll be more helpful than a textbook
