Have I been duped at Raymour and Flannigan?
Where to buy a decent god damn couch

Where do you go and buy living room furniture and be sure you're not getting ripped off?
You can not go by the feel and price alone. I went to a Value City Furniture store recently and absolutely loved a sofa with 2 recliners for 600. I left the store without buying to check out the exact sofa online for reviews. The average lifespan of that sofa was 2-6 months. Good thing I didn't buy it on impulse or spur of the moment even though every fiber in my body said perfect color, perfect fabric, height, style, and great price.
My parents have bought 6-7 sets of sofas from what I could remember and the two biggest pieces of advice I can give beyond always reviewing the exact sofa online first are the following.
Sleeper sofas are 10x more durable than a regular sofa which is 10x more durable than a recliner. Sleeper sofa>>regular sofa>>recliner sofa. Sleeper sofa's are built to withstand more weight and usually have a better frame/spring system. If you are going to the cheaper stores make sure it is a sleeper sofa. They will at least last longer for that given quality.
Second make sure the cushions are removable and have zippers. Zippers will allow you to replace the foam years down the road and allow you to easily clean the fabric. In addition, when the fabric gets worn down you can flip it upside down and get more life out of the cushions before replacing the fabric/sofa.
Never finance and never buy any furniture the same day you have seen it. You will save yourself a great deal of money and heartache.
Best of luck,

Edit: To answer the OP's question more directly. Do not let them make you feel shame/embarrassment. Set the expectation from the beginning that you will not buy any piece of furniture that day. No matter what you see, feel, or think you will not commit to any furniture that day. You need to have sufficient time to look at reviews and consider your finances, without any social pressure they may attempt to apply, to make the best rational decision. There will always be more sofa's and furniture there is no rush in time. Remember buying any big ticket item requires research and should never be done in a single day. Following this advice if you return to purchase that furniture, you will have confidence the next day knowing you made a rational decision considering all the facts first.
