I have never seen a mini-USB to RJ45 cable to connect to a switch. What I have seen though are switches that have both a RJ45-style serial connector and a mini-USB connector. The mini-USB connector requires a USB to mini-USB cable and connects to the USB port on your computer. When connected to the computer it will be recognized as a USB to Serial converter. Thankfully as time has passed, those have gotten a lot more standardized. It’s rare to find anything these days that isn’t the Cisco pinout. Most new stuff is just USB which is even better. But vendors who use USB connectors without putting USB on the port annoy the crap out of me. More on reddit.com

You don't need to do anything special on the patch/extension side. Any RJ45 coupler/patch will result in no wire transposition. Only one cable in the chain needs to be a rollover, the rest can be Ethernet-spec. So: ACS - Rollover - Anything - Switch This is similar to how you can extend your laptop rollover cable with a standard female-female coupler and patch cable. Get some flat, 8-wire cable to make your rollover cables if you want to make your life easy and ditch anything DB9 unless necessary. I know this from direct experience. We use Avocent everywhere. I have a USB connector, cat5e cabling and RJ45 jacks. I assume there's some converting that has to be done in the middle to convert USB's 4 wires to cat5e's 8 wires.. I appreciate any help, thanks.

I was in a pinch with a down cisco router and had to make one on the spot, basically it's 3 parts, 1: A usb to serial adapter 2: A serial cable 3: rj45 cable just cut the serial and RJ45 cables in half and join the wires according to This pinout guide Also note that a lot of usb to serial adapters automatically set the com port to something silly like com11 and many terminal apps like putty only work with com1 or com2, you often have to go into device manager and find the usb to serial adapter and manually set it to com1 or 2.

I have never seen a mini-USB to RJ45 cable to connect to a switch. What I have seen though are switches that have both a RJ45-style serial connector and a mini-USB connector. The mini-USB connector requires a USB to mini-USB cable and connects to the USB port on your computer. When connected to the computer it will be recognized as a USB to Serial converter.

It's RS-232 serial protocol. USB mini-B is a device-side port. How would a serial cable from those two standard even work, with a serial coupled to the RJ-45? If your FC switch has a mini-B, then plug into it with a USB cable from a host (Type A or USB-C) to mini-B, and look for a serial device at /dev/ttyUSB* or /dev/ttyACM* (Linux), /dev/tty.usb* (Mac), or COM* (Windows). If your FC switch has an RJ-45 port, then start with a serial adapter for "Cisco rollover" pinout, then if that won't work, determine the pinout with a logic analyzer or through trial-and-error.
