As a former resident of the Denver Metro Area (1990-2007) and have since revisited in 2020 and last year; in my experience and in my opinion, Denver has one of the best public transportation systems in the country. I had no problems of any sort using public transportation in Denver and the surrounding areas/suburbs. On a side note though…. public transportation is the only place in the entire world where you can see every solitary stereotype that exists and that’s not hyperbole. Sometimes, it’s like the Jerry Springer Show as almost anything can happen. I even took the light rail 🚈 🚋 (riding on the B Union Station to Westminster, G Union Station to Wheat Ridge Ward Station, L 30th & Downing to 16th & Stout, W Union Station to JeffCo - Golden Station). The routes I rode on were 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 16, 20, 21, 28, 31, 38, 40, 44, 51, 52, 72, 88, 120 and 121.

RTD looks like it's very good at getting people to a parking lot next to the freeway, less useful if you want to step off the train and be at a real destination...

Getting to and from Denver is pretty easy and good, and moving through the city is easy enough, although not great since it’s not that dense for a downtown. The worst part of RTD is trying to get from one non-central location to another. It can take two hours for a 20 minute drive, and bus frequency on suburban lines is often awful. The light rail is decent but many of the stations aren’t walkable at all, most people have to use them as park and rides or take infrequent buses to make it convenient. They’ve made a ton of compromises to not disturb car traffic and it shows. There are some good BRT routes here, like the buses between Denver and Boulder. Honestly, those are my favorite lines in the area because they don’t have to make the same compromises the light rail does in route selection. Finally, RTD as an agency is poorly run. I can’t say it’s better or worse than other transit agencies, I’ve only worked with RTD, but it’s not good. They’re understaffed on labor and full of middle management that can’t agree on what to do so they do nothing. They also tend to cheap out on things and have to redo them, wasting a ton of money. I’ve had multiple employees tell me “if you like doing the same projects twice, work for RTD.” Not ideal.
