September 30, 2025 - These massive, winged reptiles evolved and lived during the Mesozoic Era (circa 252-66 million years ago) alongside dinosaurs. The earliest pterosaurs on record occurred during the Late Triassic Period (237-201 million years ago). The largest pterosaurs belong to the Azhdarchidae family, characterized by large skulls with elaborate cranial crests, long necks, short, stout bodies, and toothless jaws. Paleontologists have discovered flying dinosaurs, such as Archaeopteryx and Anchiornis.

This Giraffe-Sized Reptile Was the Largest Flying Creature to Ever Live
December 9, 2021 - Part of the reason it has taken so long to unearth Quetzalcoatlus' secrets is because, like modern flyers, it had hollow bones that helped it fly. "You have these sort of potato chip-like bones preserved in very hard rock, and you've got to remove the bones from the rock without destroying them," Matthew Brown, a vertebrate paleontologist at the University of Texas in Austin, tells CNN. Upon analyzing their collection of bones excavated from Big Bend National Park in Texas, the team discovered two new pterosaur species. One of them was a second, smaller type of Quetzalcoatlus, which had a wingspan reaching 20 feet.

Was ‘Dracula’ the Biggest Flying Creature Ever? - Atlas Obscura
August 7, 2025 - The largest Azhdarchids were once thought to be similar to modern soaring birds like seagoing albatrosses or canyon-dwelling condors, both of which are ungainly and slow on the ground. Today, Azhdarchids are often compared with storks, which can fly but spend most of their time on foot, hunting small prey or scavenging. Recent speculative dinosaur documentaries like 2022’s Prehistoric Planet depict Azhdarchids like storks, as leggy opportunists who stroll around snapping up whatever they can get in their long, stabbing beaks, from baby dinosaurs to dinosaur carrion.
