You do not want this. You can attempt to replace the stems of the valve, but even that can be risky on an extremely old valve. My plumbing is from 1930s, with the exception of a pipe my plumber replaced. What started as recaulking has turned into a bigger ordeal than I thought. My EX boyfriend grouted and didn’t seal it and filled the spaces behind the tile with plumbers putty or grout or both. (I’ve identified the leak and repaired the kitchen ceiling). I have cleaned it out and want to replace it all but will the old pipes work with newer hardware? Is it called hardware? 😂My new best friends at our local hardware store have walked me through a lot of my issues and I’m relatively capable but am I looking at a huge difficult project? Thank you! PS of course I will diligently caulk everything!

The phfister stems are easy enough to get. Just need to know if they are long or short ones. But companies like moen and delta make a retrofit kit to replace the whole valve with a single handle pressure ballanced valve

For bath faucets, you can use any faucet with 1/2 inch connections. For kitchen faucets you have a couple options. You can stick with faucets that have 1/2 inch connections or if you're brave you can change out the plumbing connections and get a faucet with built in supply lines. It's not required but whenever I swap out a faucet I add shutoff valves and install braided supply lines. If you don't have (or want) a pex crimping tool you can buy 1/2 inch shark bite connectors with shutoff valves. For the shower head, I prefer the oxygenics brand. For the actual shower valve, you'll want to stick with RV valve/mixers. Household showers valves aren't really RV compatible. More on reddit.com

Did this get resolved? I am dealing with my replacement Pfister cartridge now. I noticed mine has an adapter on the end, which has oval hot/cold openings. Its removable if you have the older more shallow valve body that needs round hot/cold openings. If you leave the adapter on when it’s not needed, it can cause the problem you describe. They're also replacing the faucet and handle set and they have to cut into the shower to do so. I've never had to hire a plumber before so I'm nervous. The first plumber wanted to charge about $4k but that cost also included a pressure regulator and tank expansion. The second plumber said that was unnecessary because our PSI is only 65.

Shower valves can suck ass so they are generally always billed high. Trim kits are cheap unless you have to have something special done. Replacing pressure regulators and all that I couldn’t even say if he priced it right without seeing it. Just from your description for the full scope of work and if this was all I had to go on, id build my estimate high and if it’s easier than I thought id give you a discount at the end that matches work performed.
