I had a similar setup that always felt awkward and I finally figured out how to fix it over the past couple of months. My room isn’t exactly like this but the general advice should remain the same. Get a straight couch (not L shaped) and pull it away from the wall a bit. It feels counterintuitive but leaving even just a few inches of space behind a couch can really open up a space. It’ll also give your curtains some room to breathe so they don’t look like the couch is crushing them so much. It’s hard to tell from these photos but if you have space I’d get a small cute chair in a different fabric from the couch. I’d either put it where the ottoman is now or on the opposite side of the room if it’ll leave you enough space to walk between the doorways. I’d also put a side table next to the couch. Maybe a cute vase and some coasters on it. This isn’t layout related but I’d also recommend replacing those cube shelves with a proper TV unit. It’ll look a lot cleaner. I recently bought a few IKEA Besta units and I’m very happy with them. They’re simple, clean, customizable, and most importantly very affordable. December 12, 2024 - I would move the couch away from the wall and float it as a room divider of its small enough. Then shift the TV to smaller wall. I would buy darker curtains and hang them slightly higher so the window is a statement piece. If you’re putting something in front of the windows keep it small like a chair or bench seating.

Looked further at the room, so here are just my ideas. Small couch in front of the window. Small armchair adjacent, facing the small window. If it swiveled or had legs (which makes a chair easier to shift), it could be turned to converse with the couch or watch tv. A coffee table, but you need lighting too. Either put end tables at either side of the couch or pull it off the window and have a console table behind with lamps on either end. MCM lamps were pieces of art in themselves. You can get reproductions, but you might find originals at estate sales and used stores. How about a plant shelf or cat tree in front of the small window? Rug big enogh to at least go under the front feet of the couch and hold the chair and coffee table completely. You have lovely floors, so I would want plenty of floor space around the rug.. I can't see the wall on the other side of the door, but you definitely want the longest runner that will fit. It takes 6 steps (about 6 ft) to remove soil from shoe soles. More on reddit.com

I need to buy new furniture for this space. Our living room looks like a kids first apartment... (Mostly because that's what this furniture was and we're just now upgrading.) I know it needs color, more homey touches and art. My biggest problem is starting with anchor pieces.
I want to get new furniture but I can't figure out how to put things in this room without it being over crowded or too empty.
I need at least 3 seats, preferably 4. And space for 2 medium dog kennels. I might get one of those entertainment center tables that had two kennels built in.
If you had this space what anchor pieces would you buy and how would you arrange the furniture?
I like cozy home stuff, antiques and cottage look. But my partner prefers a more traditional style, in his own words "like my parents house in the 90s". 🫠
*That ugly random light fixture is going, it's on the to-do list. But for now I hate everything and it provides light.
