Why do people insist on solid wood as if it’s better. I’m not trying to be critical, but maybe as an industry we just haven’t helped clients fully see the downsides of working with solid materials for large dimension applications. It’s so difficult to keep wood stable without notable expanding, contracting, bowing, twisting etc. More on reddit.com

September 23, 2019Typical cost difference of solid wood cabinets (not the boxes). Is there a ratio like twice the price.
We will make solid hardwood panels under the right circumstances, but as others pointed out using a veneered sheet good is actually the better product in the long run. Making hardwood panels is much more expensive as well, as the labor time is greatly increased. If you are getting 5 piece doors then the frames will be hardwood and the center panels sheet goods. If you are getting slab doors then any good cabinet maker will tell you not to use solid hardwood as it will warp and shrink. More on reddit.com

those lowers are gorgeous, no notes. can you tell us a little bit about the door construction? is it a shop sawn veneer? if its solid, i understand that you have the sliding dovetails to keep them flat, but couldnt they expand or contract and mess with the north south reveal over time? especially with them being inset. with the grain of the doors being horizontal, it feels like a genuine concern. i ask out of genuine interest, as my shop messes with the rules of hardwoods too, its just led me to shop sawn veneers for that aesthetic. very clean install as well. pulls look fantastic. I really like this modern yet classic style of kitchen cabinets, however I think this would be soooo much nicer in solid walnut but struggling to find info on what’s the structural limit, size wise for drawers like the example above.
The other advise I’m after is, is it grass to have the grain run vertical with solid wood? Is walnut wide enough to take 2 drawers and run the grain?
I know a solid wood is a lot more expensive, particularly walnut, but surely it must be better than HDF/MDF or particle board right?
We only want drawers in our kitchen, no doors, even integrated appliances we’ll make faux drawers to match the rest of the lines.
