r/Somalia on Reddit: Why do Somalis look down on blue collar jobs but are ok with welfare ?
February 20, 2017 -

It is embarassing because in the uk somalis are known to take benefits and they dont feel embarassed. They seem to think it comes from god and not from the hard work of the tax payer citizens ? It has gotten better lately and I do see way more somalis working but its still bad. Even in Somalia itself the craftsmen (madhiban people) are despised even though theyre needed. Why are somalis so backwards !?!?

r/SeattleWA on Reddit: There are way more than 539 Somali 'daycares' in this state.

That number is based off of the number of daycares that list Somali as an official language. However, if you look at this list, most of them do not list an official language (similar to how many of them don't have a home address) but very clearly have almost identical names to daycare centers that do have Somali as an official language, usually just someone's name.

Check out the list here, this is within 10 miles of Burien, one of the larger population centers of the Somali community: day care list.

Of the first 50 I looked through of the 1,000+ entries, 49 of them appear to be Somali owned but only 17 of them list Somali as the official language. Just look at the list yourself.

r/AskConservatives on Reddit: What is up with the Minnesota Somali stuff?

I like to lurk r/conservative and this subreddit just to monitor the heartbeat of people I heavily disagree with. In many ways it's more informative as it presents a different viewpoint than the subreddits I already agree with.

Recently, it's almost as if every post there is about Somali aid and Tim Walz. Can any conservative give me their objective explanation about why it's such a big deal (if it's a big deal)? It's not something leftist aggregates are focusing on, so I'm genuinely curious if it's a big deal or a nothing burger.

Update:

I want to thank everyone for commenting here. Judging by the number of comments this is clearly an important issue for most people. As it should be, large scale fraud should absolutely be stomped out.

It seems there is overwhelming evidence that there is/was fraud. Any reasonable person would arrive to that conclusion. The question is whether state government leadership was complicit. I see compelling arguments for both sides. Regardless, the fact fraud of that scale happened is an indictment on leadership either through complicitness or incompetence.

I see some people bring up other types of fraud in other states. While such cases are also deplorable and true, I want to avoid the whataboutism we accuse the right of doing. The original question was about Minnesota fraud, and that should be the focus.

Some MAGA influencer goes to a daycare during holiday season, demands to see the kids, and was denied entry by the daycare owners. He shows no press credentials and concludes that rampant fraud exists because he couldn't see kids on one occasion.

All I am thinking is, "MAGA influencers really made random shmucks believe they can be serious journalists just by badgering people for interviews."

I don't know much about fraud, but I assume that it tends to be more sophisticated than that. I personally believe there is some fraud that exists among Somali daycares in Minnesota, but I assume it is more likely to be of the act of **exaggerating the number of kids in the program rather than a complete scam where the daycares are completely empty.**

What is even more retarded is conservatives believing that because this story has been underreported (in their eyes), that they should immediately believe any fake journalism that confirms their priors.

Some things I want to clarify: This is used with ChatGPT, but they're all my ideas. I used it to polish things up. I think the endgame for Somalia isn't Somaliweyne, but for reer galbeed and reer Kenya to continue being apart of those nations. The British did fuck us over, but they've also given us a chance. We have the opportunity of a lifetime. I don't want to say too much here, but ethnicity > "nation." Give them ID's and access to Somali citizenship, but only if they can verify their lineage. We don't want any intruders. I think we should give halfies born before state stabilization Somali citizenship. The Somali identity has crashed, it's not their fault their mother chose to marry out. It's honestly tragic. Us Somali men have to be better. Plus, halfies are very loving of their mothers side (most of the time) and a lot of them only fit in with us. Our friends in the long term will be Arab world and Turkey. It pains me to say this, as I am very untrusting of these people. They're ruthless, merciless, relentless people, but better the devil you know. Ethiopia will always be our enemy, as much as I hate to say it. Whether an Ethiopian is Muslim, Jewish or Christian, or whether an Ethiopian is Oromo, Habesha, Afar, it doesn't matter. We're just too different. Africa has massive potential. The faster Africa develops, the more I want us to lessen economic ties with people outside of Africa.

Lmao. Update step 1 1-20 years: secure monopoly on violence and establish basic security. If we can get that in 20 years, everything else will be easier. The governmental structure, as it is now, will 100% be unable to achieve even that in the next 50 years. Diaspora needs a basic history and cultural lesson about our people back home.

Hi. So I'm a westerner with no real concept of the third world. I came across a recent statistic that showed that Somalia has a 20%+ unemployment rate. Yet the life expectancy is 56 years old. I'm curious how Somalians can live so long with such a high unemployment rate. How do most people make their living then? Do jobs even exist? What do people do to feed themselves and afford rent? Sorry for the ignorant questions I'm just very sheltered but curious as to the realities of the third world.

Are most Somalians still happy and content with life? Or are most depressed and suicidal due to grim prospects?

This article is a couple months old now but what’s happening isnt new and hasn’t stopped. People frequently post here about how “the west pays the bills” and “we shouldn’t piss them off” but who’s bills are they paying? What value has the government generated for the aid to be worth it? Centralizing power for the government that can’t pay its own bills is soft colonization. If corrupt politicians are making more money as a failed state, why would they even want to function? Thoughts?

The Somali daycare fraud isn’t shocking, it’s exactly what you’d predict. People raised in a kin-based, failed state don’t start following abstract rules just because they moved to a high-trust society. Protecting your clan, maximizing resources, and treating government rules as optional? Totally rational. Blacked-out windows, empty classrooms, evasive staff, this isn’t moral failure. It’s material reality meeting predictable incentives.

Want to integrate people like this successfully? Real enforcement, visible consequences, and accountability. You can’t treat them like a blank slate. Their kin will cover for them, and I’d probably do the same in their shoes. I hold no ill will for people doing exactly what I would do in their shoes. Lax oversight guarantees this outcome.

Do you think the state government will ever admit to their wrong doing by allowing so many Somali refugees to assimilate in Minnesota? It’s puzzling to me that I see the Somali population in my neighborhood driving brand new vehicles while at the same time never leaving their house. There are multiple vehicles at these houses at all times of the day so I know for a fact they are not working. Are they just living off tax payers dollars for the most part?

Wallahi I believe only educated diaspora Somalia can revive Somalia and help remove tribalism and bring in the correct interpretation of Islam and build our country. It’s time to stop hoping for things and actually take action. I would like to create a discussion rather it be a weekly zoom or group. Let me know what your opinion is. Inshallah Somali will be revived and we will leave this dark age by the will of Allah.

I’m an Oxford DPhil, so I would fit the ‘educated diaspora’ criteria. And still, there’s a certain arrogance (and one might say ignorance) in this viewpoint. How can people who do not live in a place, have not experienced a place (and what a range of experiences we have missed out on), and lack the necessary knowledge of the place in consequence, ‘fix’ said place and it’s major historical problems? How many of us can even speak the Somali language with a native fluency? I know for a fact many of us struggle to think and fully express ourselves in Somali, even if we technically speak and understand the language. And with this we’ll fix a country torn apart by civil war and tribalism? Have you ever thought that locals might be sceptical of what they would deem to be foreigners even if we’re still Somali. The jokes against diaspora who go back home by locals are light-hearted and brotherly, but they underlie the fact they see us as something else, something foreign. Now imagine telling them we’ll fix their mess, because that is what this suggests, and in that tone. It’s worth adding, there’s already an alarming trend of locals being sceptical of returning diaspora who see Somalia as a cash cow ready for exploitation, while they suffer. It is better to suggest that educated diaspora can help the recovery process. To suggest that we can fix and revive a nation that is [sadly] foreign to us is to be naive. Perhaps this response is considered overly semantical and pedantic, but words have meanings and understanding what they convey and what they can imply is key, all the more when we talk of fixing a nation. Nonetheless, I do appreciate the enthusiasm to ‘fix’ Somalia and network with other educated Somalis, it correlates well with this post from myself a few weeks ago now (I made the point about not having the ‘fix Somalia’ attitude in its penultimate paragraph! https://www.reddit.com/r/Somalia/s/nSUMVBZ82v )

Unpopular opinion: diaspora should stay out of the government and government officials should only have a somali passport. Diaspora should focus on economically developing the country by bringing the capital and the knowledge from their host country to somalia. Somalia needs educated diaspora to dig up petroleum, build dams, build factories, bring new inventions to somalia and wacyigalin (preaching) the locals on how qabyaalad is holding us back, not joining the politics of a country you can leave in 5 seconds if things go south.

It’s beautiful how open and friendly somalis are to each other, specially in foreign countries. It is something i love about somalis. I have been to many countries and saw many cultures, but the somali one is rare. Everywhere i went I always found that one person who is willing to help with anything. I hope this part of humanity stays. And kindness and love is spread regardless of someone qabil. I’m ethnically somali but culturally, i wish i was. Eid mubark.
