r/audible on Reddit: Spotify is now offering audiobooks for Premium members; will this make you drop Audible?
November 8, 2023 -

I just paused Audible for 90 days, yesterday, and today I discovered that Spotify is giving 15 hours of audiobook listening per month as part of an individual Premium membership.

I don’t feel like I’ve been getting my money’s worth from Audible. I can’t seem to keep up with my credits, plus I have no need to own a fiction book I’ll only listen to once. Even having access to the Plus catalog isn’t worth it, if the titles are on Spotify or through my library. I have a feeling I’ll be dropping Audible completely very soon. I already started checking the titles on Spotify, and a lot of the titles on my Audible wish list are available.

r/audiobooks on Reddit: So I'm guessing not ALL Audiobooks are covered by Spotify Premium?
February 8, 2024 -

Full disclosure I posted this to the Spotify subreddit but it got removed.

The new Animorphs audiobook came out yesterday (Megamorphs 3: Elfangor's Secret) and I thought that would be the perfect book to test run the Spotify audiobook system on given I do pay for premium only to learn it still required me to buy it?

I checked other books and I could still listen to them for 'free' but Elfangor's Secret still required a buy.

I'm guessing new releases aren't covered for a period of time?

I thought this might help somebody on spotify and wants to listen to the 15 hours free audiobook hours that are given to the main account holder. Remember it resets on your Spotify payment day.

if you have listened to a book that has for instance 10 hours listening time. You can go onto audible (owned by Amazon) even if you aren’t a member and search under the listening hours. So if I have 5 hours left I can tick the 3-6 hours option and it lists books. If I find one that is 5 hours or less I can then see if it is on Spotify. I tried 3 random and all were on spotify. That way you are getting the best out of your listening time. There is also a 1-3 hours option that would be good for anyone whose first book was 12 or so hours.

I think the search facility is different on phones laptops and iPads etc so just look around but it is definitely there.

Hope this might help someone. One thing to note with the free 15 hours is it’s only the main account holder and you cannot speed up the book to reduce the hours. A 12 hour book will always be 12 hours even if you have it at 1.5 speed etc.

I'm sure experts may have even more ideas but hope this is useful to know. Reddit have helped me numerous times so thought I’d try to help someone else.

r/audiobooks on Reddit: Spotify Premium users: do you use your audiobook hours each month?
March 18, 2025 -

I'm curious- do you actually use your free audiobook hours each month?

I primarily use Libby and can get pretty much every book I want through the library (I have multiple cards). Since my TBR is so long, I don't mind waiting if a book has a long hold.

I try to use Spotify for books that aren't available through Libby, but lately I feel like I'm forcing it- listening to books I'm not even really into just to "maximize" my Spotify subscription. I'm starting to think I should just stick to Libby and stop stressing about using up my Spotify audiobook hours.

Curious if anyone else has a similar experience or if they feel they are really getting a good value from Spotify!

I was so excited when I learnt Spotify were introducing audiobooks. Finally, I had a way of streaming music and audiobooks in one easy to use app rather than paying for multiple subscriptions. Ohhh how wrong I was. I've had multiple occasions now where I'm facing restrictions that I just don't understand.

I wanted to get these written down in case anyone can provide any clarification, and I'm also really interested in any thoughts that anyone else has on this.

  1. So Premium Spotify members can access free 15 hours of audiobooks a month, but that's only applicable to the lead person on a family account. How is that fair? I arranged a family plan for myself and some family members to save us money, why do they not get the same services that I do? Does anyone know if this is being looked into?

  2. You get given 15 hours of listening time per month on Premium, unless you buy the audiobook. I do understand this, but, for example, I've been listening to Mythos by Stephen Fry which is included in Spotify Premium. I've downloaded it so I can listen offline, but this is still included in the 15 hour limit. Also, because it's included in Spotify Premium, I cannot figure out how I could purchase it so I could listen to it as much as I wanted??

Hi, apologies if already discussed. Wanted to know your thoughts on whether the free audio books 15 hours per month is a challenge to Audible subscription, especially for people like me who are members but don't use the service as much as I would like. I'm still an avid book reader so combining the two mediums is quite challenging.

October 4, 2023 - I'm listening to "a fire upon the deep" and its a 23h long audiobook. I'd just be pissed when I get cut off lol ... They're gonna add this service and then another service and then they'll jack up the price on the subscription. Happens every time. I just want ad free music. That's the only thing I care about. ... I tend to listen to Spotify a lot as it is, this is just a little perk for when I run out of podcasts to listen to on it 🤣

Just found this out a few days ago. Huge library of audiobooks now come with Spotify premium. It’s the same price as an audible membership but no credits, just listen to whatever you want. The interface isn’t great since it’s not really designed for audiobooks but it works fine.

I’m currently listening to Nightfall by Asimov.

Edit: Some have mentioned that it’s capped at 15hrs per month. Oof. I didn’t see that mentioned anywhere. Makes it far less awesome.

r/audible on Reddit: Is the audiobook feature on Spotify a game changer for audiobook platforms?
September 3, 2025 -

So, I’ve been a Spotify Premium subscriber for over 10yrs and my understanding is that subscribers are allowed up to 15hrs of audiobooks per pay period. Now those books don’t belong to me and I can’t necessarily stream them anytime I want with said limitations but I feel like I can chop my Audible wish list in half by casually listening on Spotify.

A lot of what I have on my Audible wishlist is stuff I’m curious about but don’t necessarily want to spend a credit/money on and own forever. Buuut without this feature on Spotify, I think all of my audiobook consuming would remain on Audible.

So, just curious, does this audiobook feature throw a wrench in the works with Audible and other audiobook platforms? Is this a game changer? I ask because if I’m planning on Turing towards Spotify for some casual listening, then so are many other users.

Thoughts?

P.S. I’m aware that Amazon Music now has Audible included with 1 audiobook a month to compete.

I just opened up spotify and got a pop up saying hundreds of thousands of Audiobooks are now included with your premium membership? Does anyone know if there’s a listening cap or is it all included unlimited??! Just seems a bit too good to be true considering there’s a TON of well known, good popular books on there that are all included.

August 9, 2023 - I don't really see the benefit of Spotify investing into the audiobook world if they can't beat Audible's subscription. ... Think this is more of an entry offer for their existing premium user base that doesn’t listen to audiobooks at all, and overall a test to see how a larger cohort engages with audiobooks and how/whether their reading habits/interests align with their taste in music/podcasts, if at all.

I discovered about three weeks ago Spotify has audiobooks. I’ve been meaning to listen to more audiobooks, so the added service was appreciated. What I didn’t notice nor was obvious to me was that the premium membership only included 15 hours.

I found this post from 5 months ago, so I guess I’m not the only one who didn’t realize, but it seems like many were also well aware.

I have a few issues with this service. For starters at least on the iOS app it isn’t apparent there’s a 15 hour limit. Nowhere do I see text indicating a limit or any sort of timer. So I just assumed it was a new service included in my plan, but now it sorta feels a bit like a bait and switch.

The other thing is it will alert you on the app you exceeded your listening limit, but there’s no easy or simple way to top it up from the app. They do send you a link via email, but you then gotta log on in your browser and I always forget the password, and who logs on to Spotify from their phone browser anyways? I just don’t get why they’d want to make the barriers to adding additional listening time such a process?

I also saw that it costs $12.99 for an additional ten hours, but my premium Spotify account is $10.99 a month includes unlimited music and 15 hours of audiobook a month? That pricing seems very inconsistent. I’ve never bought audiobooks before so maybe that price is in line with audiobooks you’d purchase.

Not sure my point here other than just to vent and bitch a little.

r/audiobooks on Reddit: Best audiobooks on Spotify under 15 hours?
July 25, 2024 -

As a Spotify Premium member, I've been enjoying their audiobook offering with 15 hours each month. However, I did recently make the mistake of choosing a book longer than 15 hours and used up my allotted hours well before the end of the month (while you can "top up" your hours it is expensive).

This set me on the hunt for the best audiobooks on Spotify under 15 hours, and I thought I'd share some of my top picks here, including some current bestsellers and all-time favorites:

Fiction:

  • The Midnight Feast by Lucey Foley. Length: 10 hr 20 min.

  • James by Percival Everett. Length: 7 hr 49 min.

  • The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu. Length: 13 hr 53 min.

  • Funny Story by Emily Henry. Length: 11 hr 23 min.

  • The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. Length: 8 hr 33 min

  • Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. Length: 13 hr 52 min.

  • Tom Lake by Ann Patchett. Length: 11 hr 22 min

  • Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. Length: 13 hr 5 min.

  • Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. Length: 11 hr 16 min.

  • The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Length: 10 hr 25 min.

Non-Fiction:

  • The Storyteller by Dave Grohl. Length: 11 hr 38 min.

  • There is No Ethan by Anna Akbari. Length: 9 hr 57 min.

  • Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain. Length: 8 hr 19 min.

  • The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Length: 7 hr 37 min.

  • Finding Me by Viola Davis. Length: 9 hr 15 min.

  • I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara. Length: 10 hr 7 min.

  • Miracle and Wonder: Conversations with Paul Simon by Malcolm Gladwell. Length: 5 hr 45 min.

  • Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl. Length: 5 hr 43 min.

  • 101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think by Brianna Wiest. Length: 10 hr 45 min.

  • The Wager by David Grann. Length: 8 hr 28 min.

Recently started getting into audiobooks through audible, but now that I can get some through Spotify premium, I’m going to start using that as well. Right now I’m starting Stephen King’s It on Spotify, because I enjoyed 11/22/63 on audible.

I’d prefer horror, science fiction, or fantasy. I was attempting to look for full Warhammer 40K books, but so far I have come up short.

I also thought of listening to Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy but with how McCarthy writes, I fear I may miss something with it being real aloud to me rather than read the physical copy I already own and haven’t finished.

I just discovered this. If you have Spotify Premium you can listen to 15 hours of audiobooks each month. I’ve only had a quick look through. Once you choose Fantasy/Sci-fi, you can further filter to epic fantasy, urban fantasy etc.

Edit: This is for Australian and UK subscribers only. Those from the USA will have access later in the year apparently.

i feel so dumb, i’ve been researching for hours. SO i found out spotify had audiobooks and so i found a bunch of free audiobooks (classics, i’m on Chapter 8 of The Picture of Dorian Gray) to binge. ive never been an audiobook person but i like podcasts and it sort of clicked and ive been thriving on it!! but then i found out about the 15 hour limit thing! which spooked me! so i followed the online instructions to check my hour limit and how many hours i had left? not there. i check my friends spotify - she has it! then i see that family plan members cannot use audiobooks - only the plan manager can! my friend? plan manager! but… i’m actively listening to an audiobook. is it because the book was free? it isn’t one of the “included with premium” books, only plan managers have access to that. so am i going to get cut off midway through a book? are classics safe so long as its the free version? i know limits don’t exist on purchased books but im still SO CONFUSED and i’ve researched all day to no avail

Just recently started listening to audiobooks and looking for some recommendations. I was never big into reading but I recently I started listening to audiobooks on my drive to work. I'm not really sure what sort of books I would be into other than I have listened to A Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy and really enjoyed it. Does anyone have any recommendations similar to this maybe? Or something you think someone just getting into audiobooks would like? Just spotify for now as I don't want to pay anymore subscriptions (unless there are some free apps that people recommend). Any recommendations appreciated.

I just learned that Spotify offers audiobooks to premium members! I'm a premium member, but didn't know that. Browsing through their catalog, they've got tons of titles Audible has. Think your days of overpricing are numbered, Audible 👀😆

(Not really, but wouldn't it be nice? Free audiobooks included in a premium music streaming service!)
