None. The cert doesn’t matter, your skills do. Most any sql course is fine. Practice on a database.

I'm interested in what others think but something such as Azure Data Fundamentals might be good. It covers a bit more than just SQL. But if you can ever foresee Azure being used in your future it's a starting point. Not a data scientist, I am a risk professional who probably needs to know a little more than the basics. Do any certificates standout from the rest as being more legitimate?

For beginners, freeCodeCamp and SQLBolt are solid and genuinely beginner-friendly. Mode SQL tutorials are also great once you know the basics, especially for analysis-style queries. For your use case, focus on SELECTs, JOINs, GROUP BY, window functions, that’ll cover most real work. Certificates don’t matter that much in practice. They can help with structure or confidence, but employers care way more about whether you can actually write and explain queries. If you do get one, treat it as learning, not a signal

I recommend Codecademy, I’m currently going through their “Analyzing Data with SQL” pro path and intend on going through their “Design Databases with PostgreSQL” I’m learning basic queries, aggregates, how to setup PostGreSQL and create databases right now. They also offer additional SQL training like “How to analyze business metrics with SQL” and give you access to some of the big BI tools like Power BI and Tableau. They provide a certificate at the end of it but I’m not sure how much if any weight it carries career wise, but I’ve the training extremely helpful in my new role as a financial systems analyst.

For an actual certification (not to be confused with a statement of accomplishment) try the ciw database design specialist cert. The study guide is great. Can anyone share their experience or knowledge as to the best way to get certified for someone who doesn’t have experience? I know I can download MySQL, but I am looking for a true certificate.

You can get a free Azure SQL Managed Instance for a year from Microsoft. Also, the Microsoft Learn training is all freely available. The current certifications focus on Azure products. It shouldn't be hard to do some of the free training and get your Azure Foundations certificate and then start looking at some of the entry level certifications focused on SQL, Azure infrastructure, Security, etc. learn.microsoft.com

Do you work at a hospital that uses epic? Epic has a bunch of sql certs relevant to their databases you could get your work to pay for if you are an epic hospital.

I am trying to help my friend learn SQL so he can get an intro job somewhere in the computer industry doing data entry/data manipulation. I have been teaching him the basics about SQL, but I think he might need an online certificate to say that he has some knowledge about SQL (he has no computer background whatsoever).

I know of some sites like datacamp, coursera and udemy - has anyone used these sites before for paid certifications? How was your experience - were they useful and did the the certificates have any worth? Does anyone have any other recommendations?

I want to get a certification.

I took a sql nano-degree from either Udacity or Udemy. It’s a ~3 month course that I took a few years ago. I’d recommend it as a solid learning tool, and my current employers took it under consideration. If you’re looking at getting certified for the sake of boosting your chances in the job market, I’d strongly recommend focusing your energy on building a very compelling portfolio or website over a cert. Obviously a certification won’t hurt, but speaking as someone who’s given analyst interviews, if I’m not familiar with the cert, it doesn’t do much for me. I want to see what you can do.

One really good (and free) option is the Certificate of Competency in SQL from LearnSQL.com. You just take a practical exam — no fluff, no trick questions — and if you pass, you get a certificate you can add to your LinkedIn, resume, or portfolio. It’s designed to reflect real SQL skills, not just theory. If you’re up for paid options too, other solid ones include: Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals – good if you’re into the Microsoft ecosystem. Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate – great if you work with Oracle databases. But honestly, certificates are cool — they can help you get noticed — but what really makes the difference is having a solid portfolio. That’s what people keep saying, and it’s true. Hi All!

I'm trying to get further into Data Analysis and am dipping my toes in SQL. I've just completed the W3 course on SQL and am aiming to get a certification to increase my hireability. There are several certs, for MySQL, MS Access, and Oracle, etc.

Is there a certain cert or set of certs I should be aiming for?

Would the W3 course be enough to get the cert?

Any advice is appreciated.

I don't know anything about certs but having worked in the industry for 20 years, I can tell you to focus on SQL server and/or Oracle. MySQL is useful but not as your primary focus, and you should forget Access even exists.

I'm hiring for a data analyst. We will teach you what you need to know but we validate your technical aptitude. We are in Louisiana, pm me if your interested.

I'm looking for something to study and work towards. Something could give me a leg up in the professional world as a data analyst in a year or so. Are certifications worth it? Do you have suggestions of ones to look into?

Edit: and if you have other suggestions to me as a beginner not related to the certification question, I am all ears.

I interview a lot of SQL candidates, and no, there are none in particular. I just look for someone who has taken the time to educate themselves, regardless if it's more of an old-school type cert, or something more modern like passing a Coursera track in SQL. Of course, the candidate needs to be able to speak SQL at a proficiency which befits their experience. Candidates straight out of college who have a relevant degree, have taken a SQL course once or twice, but don't remember much of it and haven't bothered to do anything on the side to enhance their skills don't make it very far in the interview process. TL;DR I don't focus on a specific cert.

Not a SQL dev or an analyst but as an software eng, I will say that certs (outside of some very specific business domain areas) are generally viewed with skepticism and are rarely, if ever, used to determine a candidate's qualifications. 9/10 your experience and performance in technical interviews will determine your fit for the role. For a beginner, I would first focus on mastering the basics of SQL first, then pick ONE flavor of SQL to learn more deeply. Certs can be worth it but really only from a personal professional development perspective.

I got my undergrad in finance and HR. I had some experience with part time and internships is business related roles such as operations, administration etc. I started grad school recently and shifted from commerce to business Analytics which is more tech and quantitative. I am currently trying to add on certifications that will help me after I graduate with jobs etc. I was considering a SQL and tableau certification because almost every business analyst job need this as a skill. However i don’t know where to get a credible certification from. I want something that is affordable and something I can finish within 4/5 months while I’m currently in grad school. I don’t know if I should go with a independent organisation like institute for certification of computing professionals etc or software vendors like Microsoft, oracle, google cloud services etc. The thing with software vendors I worry is that they teach more leaning towards the usage of their softwares and when I’m applying to jobs I want to be flexible and not just know one type of software or this is a bad decision? Please help me out and suggest certifications that are credible and will help me with employment.

I think having a competent understanding of SQL is more important than having any particular certification. The argument could be made that there are plenty of free courses and certifications out there that would do the trick and paying for one is silly. But it's up to whatever your learning style is. That being said, Front Range Community College (based out of Colorado, but it's a remote class) offers a paid ($230), instructor led, two part course that I really liked. There are two classes a week and there's a forum where you can talk about the coursework with other people. After I completed that class, I felt very confident with creating and working within databases. It also gave enough of an understanding that I was able to hold my own in the interview for my future job as a DE. It should be said I supplemented the course with a lot of projects and leetcode

Yes thats correct, because most business/data analyst roles require you to be able to develop sql scripts at a bare minimum.

Is it worth getting a SQL certification? Are there high paying jobs it would open up for me( 6 figures and up) ? . I currently work as a data analyst and use SQL quite a bit and working on finishing up an advanced SQL course. Figured since I’m taking the course maybe I should try to get a certification when I’m done.

The cert is just a signal to folks that don't know you that you have some proficiency. The companies and teams that are using Oracle, MS, Snowflake, etc. That heavily won't have much of an idea of your proficiency with their application of SQL. Also as an analyst, i would just guess you aren't managing a big data warehouse doing ETL (or automating it). So, i try to argue focus on your logic. If there is a cert that makes you more knowledge to do work better, look into it. Also figure out what kind of role you want MORE than the salary. I've watched too many DBAs and newer analysts burn out or realize they got hired into a job beyond their capabilities struggle and fake it.

I'm gonna be 100% honest with you.... No one GAF about any SQL certifications. If you can show them what you're capable of, though. Now that is worth talking about. Here's how to show any employer that you are proficient in SQL: Create a Github, and work on a project that uses SQL to query for data. Have numerous SQL files, and be ready to talk about the kind of joins you did, the size / scale of the data in the project (and in your work!!) Use websites like Hackerrank to practice SQL Drill/practice SQL interview questions. Any interviewer that asks you a question on SQL is expecting a decent well thought out answer Include specific examples in your resume of what you have ACHIEVED -- KEY WORD -- ACHIEVED using SQL. No one cares you 'Utilized SQL in my role on a daily basis'. What did you do with it? I.e. Utilized SQL to retrieve a 1.5M row dataset which was transformed using UNIONS and JOIN statements for use in a mission-critical Power BI reporting dashboard Now I realize I'm being a bit harsh on certifications, so in closing let me explain why I hate them.... They show nothing at all about your skill. Anyone can use flashcards, exam dumps, or flat out cheat on an exam. But it also says nothing about what you've done in a real live business environment

I'm graduating from college next May and wanted to strengthen my SQL skills.

There isn't a strong program at my college, so planning on doing self-learning

DataCamp and Coursera are what you’re looking for. They both provide certifications after you’re finished with their programs. I’ve got them myself and they’re pretty enjoyable, and you can go at your own pace. I recommend taking a lot of notes though, and try to play with data sets to build more experience for yourself. There are about 300,000 data sets you can play with on data.gov. Keep practicing manipulating data sets and you’ll be a pro in no time!

I did the SQL certification course from W3 schools and it was...fine. I'd say it was maybe 25% of the stuff I was already doing on a daily basis by then. If you'd like to improve, I'd suggest the course 101 Practice SQL Questions: Basic to Advanced on Udemy. That one lines up much more closely with the real-world applications you're likely to encounter.

I'm trying to build my CV to apply for my first internship with SQL and soon enough Tableau, are there any online certifications that are worth doing ? Any tips on how to build my CV?

The only certs worth getting are the ones offered by the platform vendor themselves. If you want to get a cert for Oracle, get on Oracle's certification path.

But really, getting a cert just proves that you learned enough to pass the test. There are brain dumps out there, there are even companies that will take the test for you! The cert doesn't tell a prospective employer that you'll be able to do the job itself.

Honestly I would say that those certificates only impress hr /managers. Once the respective experts looks at the applicants it’s worth is next to nothing. Nowadays git repos get you way further. Pick a database and a nice idea and just bring life into it. Trust me this is harder than any course out there - building the database and analysis from scratch . But that’s what shows true skill and passion.

In my experience SQL certification isn't that well regarded outside of DBA kind of roles. Real world experience you can talk over in your current role is likely to be much more useful.

As far as I know, there is no such cert, at least among the respected ones. However you might want to look into SQL Developer certs for either Oracle or MySQL. MS's DP-300 might also be what you're looking for.

I don’t value sql certs when hiring personally, try using something like hackerrank, leetcode, datalemur, etc. for the skillset and create a portfolio project utilizing a MySQL database if you don’t have work experience. Basically anything you can point to that indicates you’ve touched sql will drive an interview for an entry level DA.

Learn SQL by Codecademy, Data science with python & SQL by IBM , Learn SQL basics by UC Davis are some good ones

Your better off getting an Aws or azure cloud cert. or building a data analytics portfolio.

But for sql, an Oracle cert is probably best. Ms no longer offers sql certs. You could also certify in snowflake, teradata, db2, or mysql (which would be through oracle).
