What age group is a youth "S/M" jersey meant to be for ..would this be too big for a 4yo?

I want to get a Canucks jersey for one of my friend's kids but the sizing for the kid's jerseys seem a bit odd. Sport Chek only seem to have one size for kids on their website and the youth size just has S/M and L/XL. Hoping someone on here might have some experience with getting a jersey for a little person. It's for a six year old boy and he is, apparently, a little larger (taller) than average for that age. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
For those of have an adidas authentic jersey, how is the fit? Do you wear the same size jersey you do in a t-shirt? I typically wear a size L t-shirt and wasn't sure if I should go with the size 52 jersey which seems to correspond with size L, or if I should size down to the 50.

The difference will vary somewhat depending on brand, but if you’re referring only to the newest Fanatics brand replica jerseys, there are size charts available on the Fanatics.com site. I can’t link you directly to the charts, but just click on any team’s jerseys, find an example of a Women’s or Youth jersey, and there’s a pop-up size chart available for that model.
i usually buy mens mediums because i like mine just a little baggy, but i also fit pretty much perfectly in a youth l/lx
I like the idea of a hockey jersey fitting like a long sleeve t-shirt, and not like a piece of sports gear (because I'm just sitting on the couch)

Hey all, I'm heading to the Winter Classic and am looking to get a Leafs jersey for my gf for Christmas. She is not a Leafs fan, but I imagine I can convince her to wear one for the sea of blue. That being said, I don't want to spend $110 on something she will wear once. I can get a Youth XL jersey for about 50 bucks and according to the NHL Jersey Sizing Chart, youth sizes and ladies sizes are very similar.
She's about 5'4" and 120 lbs. Any ideas if this will fit? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
UPDATE: Ordered a youth XL/L CCM. It fits, although more like a shirt than a jersey. She can probably fit a thin sweater underneath it. The real downside is, after comparing the measurements on the NHL's jersey page, it did not list sleeve length. The sleeves are VERY short, bordering on silly. However, the jersey cost me a whopping 13 dollars on eBay.
