r/tmobile on Reddit: Thinking of moving from AT&T to T-Mobile Boston area I need some real advice
June 4, 2021 -

I recently signed up for T-Mobile test drive and have been using it for a week on my Esim So far I’m super impressed with the speeds about twice as fast as AT&T coverage seems pretty good as well but it’s only been eight or nine days of course my concerns are always going to be As I begin to play more in more rural places of New England I’m not gonna have any service or really bad service. How has everyone service been so far in the Boston area and surroundings? Are there lots of dead spots do you drop lots of calls would you say it’s on par with AT&T and Verizon in and around Boston? this weekend i’m heading to old Orchard Beach maine I’m going to try going up the back roads like we normally do for the scenery and I’ll put T-Mobile to the test coverage maps show that there is service but I realize that that doesn’t mean anything I will still have my AT&T service of course we shall see what happens would appreciate any insight anyone has who has had T-Mobile for a while and a seasoned on the net workAlso I’m super interested in how reliable the service has been for you

T-Mobile is hit or miss in Maine, but it’s gotten way better over the last few years. It worked good for me in Boston near the colleges, some hang time if it was really congested but still usable. I traveled from Boston to the MA/RI border in Woonsocket and there were bo dead spots on the highway, there was one/two times if we took the back roads that I’d lose service for a second while switching towers, but this was just over s year ago since my last trip up there. Works great in RI for the most part, there are some dead/slow spots out in really rural areas (Burrillville deep in the wooded areas). Overall pretty good in the NE area from where I’ve traveled. Nothing major other than when 5g first gets put on a tower, but that’s growing pains imo.

T-Mobile is weaker in Northern New England, but AT&T isn't spectacular there either. T-Mobile only recently got low-band spectrum in a lot of Northern New England. Low-band spectrum is essential for coverage in rural areas. In Maine, they got it earlier and quickly rolled out low-band coverage over a large portion of the state (basically where you'd go, but less along the New Brunswick Canada border). T-Mobile already had low-band spectrum over most of New Hampshire so that has reasonable coverage too. Vermont is going to be the weakest state. The low-band coverage there was freed up more recently (TV station relocation) and they're working on integrating the Sprint coverage that has been there. I haven't found it to be bad, but I haven't gone to Vermont. T-Mobile is looking to expand a lot in rural areas and Northern New England is likely to be a prime target for them. However, expanding a wireless network takes years. I think we'll see significant rural improvements in the 1-3 year range. T-Mobile is fast, but they aren't magical. https://maps.t-mobile.com/pcc.html?map=mvno-roamd-5 I'd check out that map and click around. It'll give you much more information than their normal maps. It doesn't include roaming coverage, but it'll tell you approximate signal strength and on what bands. For example, at Old Orchard Beach, there should be great coverage. 600MHz LTE with top signal strength and all the other bands with great signal strength (building and house). When you see the mountain, know that signal will be hard to come by. You'll pick it up sometimes, but don't expect great signal. The car can be a little hit-or-miss depending on things. The LTE 600 is going to have the strongest signal because it's low-band. I think 2022 is going to be a big year for T-Mobile. They're going to finish dismantling the Sprint network, deploying lots of 2.5GHz 5G, and making a big rural coverage push (with that probably continuing into 2023). While you might be getting good speeds in Boston right now, they should be getting many times better in late 2021 and 2022 as T-Mobile is able to deploy 2.5GHz more. I would say that AT&T is likely to be the weakest carrier going forward. They had the most spectrum for a while, but T-Mobile now has the most followed by Verizon with AT&T being a distant third. Verizon isn't planning on deploying its capacity as widely as T-Mobile (or as quickly), but they will have a lot more capacity than AT&T coming online over the next 3 years. I don't find the coverage to be a problem, but there is a decent chance you might be disappointed. Luckily, your phone will be showing you both AT&T and T-Mobile's signal as you test it. I think T-Mobile will be making a huge push in Northern New England, but they also have other things on their plate at the same time. We know (as in T-Mobile has told investors and analysts) that T-Mobile expects most of its growth to come from rural and enterprise over the next 5 years so we know they're going to be investing a lot of money there. We saw T-Mobile invest a lot in Maine before the Sprint merger and I'd expect even more investment, but I also expect that investment to be weighted a bit more toward mid-to-late 2022 and into 2023. I'm very happy. If you aren't happy, maybe try again in 1-2 years. It's important to remember that T-Mobile didn't have the ability to serve a lot of rural areas until very recently due to licensing. So if you're asking, "if T-Mobile hasn't covered here over the past 20 years, why would a year or two make a difference," then that's the answer. They didn't cover there because of a lack of low-band licenses. As they've gotten low-band licenses, that has changed. As they've merged with Sprint and are already very large in urban areas, the way that they can grow is via rural. So the next few years will be seeing T-Mobile growing their rural presence a lot.
