How do I find out what my hotspot usage is? When I look at usage details in the T-Mobile app all I see is “Total used” for data. Under this I see line items for “Internet Access” for each date/time which I think in the past used to be “Mobile Internet”. Is this hotspot usage?
Does the iPhone report hotspot data usage?
Hotspot Data Usage
Tracking hotspot usage?
Anyone know why mobile hotspot usage is so high? It says I've used 2.41GB but I've never even turned on my hotspot in months.
In order to explain the cause of this I will first explain how T-Mobile identifies hotspot traffic.
Data is sent over the internet in packets, each packet has some metadata associated with it. Metadata is information about a packet, where it's from, where it's going to, etc etc. One of the pieces of metadata is called the TTL.
Most network traffic starts with a TTL of 64, and each time it goes through a hop it decreases by 1. A hop is the data being sent through something else. For example data being sent from a client device through the hotspot host is a hop, meaning that hotspot data has a TTL of 63 going to T-Mobile.
T-Mobile identifies traffic based on it's TTL, if it has a TTL of 63 then they count it as hotspot traffic.
That being said, hotspot traffic isn't the only traffic with a TTL of 63, other applications may also boost the TTL by 1 and make it be detected as hotspot traffic. The most common example of that is VPNs, however it is possible for other applications to also send data with a TTL of 63.
Some app on your device is likely using data with a TTL of 63.
