how much research have you done into plant care? my mum has this cycle of getting a new plant, roughly following the instructions on the label, the plant dies, my mum assumes she has a black thumb and gives up until she gets the next one. i don't mean to be condescending if you have researched, it's just a lot of people don't realise how much more information is out there than just a few symbols on a label some corners can be pretty decently lit - eg i have a window that gets afternoon sun and the corner next to it has enough to keep most plants happy spring through autumn, at least. for darker corners, cast iron plants or aglaonema might be a good choice. zz plants and snake plants tolerate a wide range of light conditions. pothos is another good choice, you can get one grown on a pole to put on the floor. of these i know cast iron plant is non toxic, and snake plant is very hard to chew lol. i also think it's a great idea to use an app to measure your light levels, it takes a few seconds but it's such a gamechanger. if a spot is getting less than 150 foot candles throughout the day i wouldn't put a plant there. The Best Common Tall House Plants for Home Decor - Lemon Thistle
May 2, 2024 - Birds of paradise are often mistaken for a banana plant which I have more photos for, they both have gorgeous big leaves. They get very tall so can add tons of height (can grow 4-6 feet tall indoors) and character to any room. Those massive leaves create such a lush, jungly vibe, and if you take really good care of these, you can get the most incredible orange and blue flowers! And surprisingly, Bird of Paradises are some of the most chill, easy-going houseplants around.

r/HouseplantsUK on Reddit: Looking for the best large, low maintenance houseplants we can add to our living/dining rooms?
June 25, 2022 -

First off, we aren't great at growing and caring for plants. It's not for the want of trying, I promise. We water, we feed, but whatever we try to keep alive tends to eventually either and die. I do have a peace lily which is doing quite well though.

The reason for my post is that the wife and I want to get some large houseplants to put in corners of rooms to add some greenery. I personally have always been a fan of Monsters, so that's in the pipeline. The issue we have is that our house gets a ton of direct sunlight at the front of the house during the morning, and just natural light in the afternoon. The rear of the house gets the opposite. We've had plants of windowsills, dining tables, coffee tables, and all but our Snake plants have withered.

Any advice on what could survive in these conditions, as well as living with a family with 2 rambunctious children would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Looking for a large/tall houseplant or tree that will do well in this space
Wait, do you intend to put it in the corner where the bar currently is? If so maybe only a snake plant. Or get a 3-4ft tall plant stand and put a nice boston fern on it. Thats actually quite a dark corner and eastern windows aren't that bright most of the day. Most of the suggestions being made here would have to be placed right in front of the window. ZZ plants get tall-ish and are super easy. Bird of paradise is taller too but those can be picky. More on reddit.com

Easy to take care of houseplants for a beginner

Honestly? Just walk into any flower or plant store and have a look around. Pick one that looks beautiful to you and take him home. If it dies it dies and you’ll just have to get another one, but if it doesn’t then you’ll have a plant that looks beautiful to you.

There’s really nothing inherently difficult about taking care of a plant either. For the most part the houseplants you’ll find for sale in general don’t want direct light, and you simply water them when the top part of the soil is dry. Depending on a lot of conditions that might be once a week, or twice a week, etc, it’s impossible to say. The most important thing is that you need to have a pot that has holes on the bottom for the excess water to drain out.

I say this as someone who just started growing houseplants last year. I spent so much time reading blog posts and reddit posts for recommendations, and even more time looking everything up to make sure I can handle it, and in the end none of it has actually mattered because my first plant was just something I saw in the flower shop at the train station one day when I was going home. I bought him… and now I have over 20 plants of different species and only one of them has died.

In short, don’t worry about it. Just get one that looks nice and go from there :)

Edit: If you have an IKEA by you that’s another place you can look too. I’ve gotten a couple of my plants from them.

The plants I like the most in my collection are the ones with the biggest leaves… so all of the philodendrons. There’s just something about those big leaves that I really like.

What is the best indoor plant to own?

You could go with Money Plants . They're really hardy and are best suited to apartments and homes.

Alternatively, if your house has some sort of central cooling and/or has a cool ambient temperature, you could also go for Jasmine - it has a nice smell and if you wanted to make some money on the side, you could sell the blossoms to nearby temples - Indian women love to wear them in their hair. You can also try getting Periwinkles . They're tough, fairly low-maintanence and their beauty lies in their simplicity.

For outdoor plants to keep in apartment balconies, bougainvillea are both beautiful and very tough - they need a bit of a warm climate and plenty of sunshine, though. Another one, while not being pretty would be Mother-in-law's tongue - this is very low maintainence and is very hardy.

I like gardening in my spare time, so I hope it helps.

Thanks so much :)

25 Easy-Care Houseplants That Are Perfect for Beginners
April 3, 2025 - It’s one of the most powerfully fragrant indoor blooming plants you can grow, plus it needs very little water. Growing Conditions: Medium to bright light; 55-75°F; allow the soil surface to dry between waterings ... A classic houseplant, the rubber tree (Ficus elastica) gets its name from the sticky, milky sap it exudes from cuts. It can eventually grow into a large tree, but you can easily keep it shorter by pruning back long stems, causing it to branch into a multi-stemmed shrub.
