The Mummy (2017) is an American action adventure film directed by Alex Kurtzman and produced by Universal Pictures, Dark Universe, Perfect World Pictures, Secret Hideout, Conspiracy Factory, and Sean Daniel Company. It is a reboot of the Mummy franchise and was intended to launch the Dark Universe, a shared cinematic universe based on classic Universal Monsters films. The film stars Tom Cruise as U.S. Army Sergeant Nick Morton, a soldier of fortune who accidentally unearths the tomb of the ancient Egyptian princess Ahmanet, portrayed by Sofia Boutella. Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, Marwan Kenzari, and Russell Crowe also star in key roles.
The story follows Nick Morton, who, along with his partner Chris Vail, discovers Ahmanet’s tomb in the Middle East during a military mission. After a sandstorm and a plane crash, Nick survives and becomes cursed, becoming the "chosen one" of Ahmanet, who seeks revenge for her unjust entombment. Ahmanet, who was promised the throne by her father, King Menehptre, but was denied after a son was born, made a pact with the deity Set to gain demonic powers, murdered her family, and was subsequently mummified alive by Egyptian priests. Her sarcophagus was buried deep beneath the desert to prevent her escape.
The film premiered at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia on May 22, 2017, and was theatrically released in the United States on June 9, 2017. It has a runtime of 110 minutes (1 hour 50 minutes) and was released in English with additional scenes in Ancient Egyptian. The film was shot on location in London, England, and featured a zero-gravity scene filmed in a specially modified plane, famously known as the "Vomit Comet," which required 64 takes and caused nausea among many crew members.
Despite its high production and marketing budget of $125–195 million, the film grossed $410 million worldwide, resulting in a financial loss of $60–95 million. It received generally negative reviews from critics, with a 35% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.4/10 on IMDb. Critics noted that the film struggled to balance its tone, blending action, horror, and humor without cohesiveness, and failed to deliver a compelling monster-centric narrative. The film was also criticized for inaccuracies in Egyptian mythology, such as portraying Set as the god of death, when in fact he was associated with chaos and violence.
Although the film was a commercial and critical disappointment, it has seen a resurgence in popularity years later. In October 2025, it ranked 10th on HBO Max’s Top 10 movies in the United States, marking a surprising streaming hit despite its initial failure. The film is available on various platforms, including Amazon, Netflix, Apple TV, and HBO Max, and has been released on Blu-ray and DVD with English audio and subtitles.
The Mummy (2017) was also nominated for eight awards at the 38th Golden Raspberry Awards, winning Worst Actor for Tom Cruise. The film's poor performance led to the cancellation of the Dark Universe project, which had aimed to connect Universal’s classic monster franchises into a shared cinematic universe.

I watched ''The Mummy'' 2017 for the first time.
The Mummy (2017) would have been ok if the studio just let it be it's own thing instead of marketing it as a remake : movies

I watched it because I was curious about how Universal wanted to start off their ''Dark Universe''. But now I know why it failed. This movie is a pile of garbage.
This was Universal's second attempt at a cinematic universe. Their other one was with Dracula Untold in 2014. I think the problem with The Mummy 2017 and also Dracula Untold is that they're trying to turn these monsters into superheroes. They're not staying true to these characters.
Another reason I watched The Mummy 2017 is because I'm a fan of Brendan Fraser's ''The Mummy'' from 1999 and ''The Mummy Returns. I love those movies. I've watched them many times. When my cable went out a long time ago I used to put on these movies just to help me fall asleep. But ''The Mummy'' 2017 is a movie I would never watch over and over again. It doesn't have the charm.
