The Witcher's Yennefer Casting Was Intended to 'Challenge' Beauty Standards
Anya’s performance hasn’t been a gripe of mine. It’s the shit writing. More on reddit.com
Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg in ‘The Witcher’
"Challenging beauty standards" my ass. She is far above the standard. More on reddit.com
"Yennefer Casting Was Intended to 'Challenge' Beauty Standards" Well you did a bad job then.
Pretty sure we need to send Anya some reassuring words after such offensive bullshit. More on reddit.com
I hate the casting of Yennefer
I mean i don't necessarily disagree, she doesn't necessarily look like Yennefer, but I think that's not important has the series isn't connected to the games, so the choice could have been based on the book's description. The way she acts thought can be how she was on the book, or poor directing. More on reddit.com

r/witcher on Reddit: The Witcher's Yennefer Casting Was Intended to 'Challenge' Beauty Standards
July 27, 2023 -
"In the book, [Yennefer's] described as the most beautiful woman in the world. This was a few years ago and I'd like to think things have changed. But when you think about people's unconscious bias -- especially in the fantasy world, it felt like these worlds were predominantly white. And I remember saying, 'I feel like we need to challenge what people think of as the standard of beauty. And having a woman of color in this role does incredibly powerful things to the people watching.'"
Kinda feels like you're just screwing your own goal over even more when you then make your diversity hire a considerably shittier character...
I actually don't mind Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, they have just let her down hard with the atrocious writing

More so than her "beauty standards" or whatever, what annoys me about Yen in the show is her wardrobe Yen in the book has a very particular taste: she exclusively dresses in black and white, and only wears silver jewelry. With how integral it is to her appearance, this is like one of the first things that comes to mind when you think about her. And they failed to get EVEN THAT right.

‘I’ve tried to separate myself from this job’: The Witcher’s Anya Chalotra on fan abuse, Henry Cavill and saying goodbye to the show | Fantasy TV | The Guardian
October 31, 2025 - When Chalotra was cast, she thought it important to do her research, playing the games and getting stuck into the books, of which she remains a fan: “When I was going back to the books this season, there’s some remarkable lines. Some incredible quotes. It’s so grounded for a fantasy.” She carried that groundedness over to the way she played Yennefer, making burning thousands of soldiers to a smouldering crisp with apocalyptic flame spells or the quiet grief of learning she was unable to have children equally plausible.
