What do people *actually* do for fun in San Francisco? (and how far do *you* travel to do it?)
I can walk out my front door and be constantly entertained/stimulated until I decide I want to go back home. That can range from random interactions with strangers to buskers playing music on the street to visiting GGP or any of our numerous parks from which every resident lives within a 10-minute walk. Underrated things to do in SF
Non-touristy would be explore neighborhoods that are more locals. That would be Cole valley, Noe valley, inner sunset, inner Richmond, and Valencia street in the mission. For hikes you can hike a few places in the city: twin peaks viewpoint is one of the highest. Touristy things would be going to pier 39 and fisherman’s wharf then over to crissy field and presidio tunnel tops with a stop by the palace of fine arts. More on reddit.com

Things to do in San Francisco ?

Here are my favorite places at/around SF area..

Land's end, Golden Gate Park, Presidio - nice walks

Baker Beach, Marshall's Beach, Battery Spencer - great views of the Golden Gate Bridge

Ghirardelli Square - love their sundaes!

Chinatown- if youre into Chinese food, lots of great food there especially Dimsum!

Palace of Fine Arts, Pier Area

Muir Woods if you can't do Yosemite.. not too far from SF about 30 mins ish.

Yosemite in 1 day wouldn't be enough.. there are lots of great hikes to do and sights to see. I'd say 2 days, 3 nights minimum would be ideal.

Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions. Hope you enjoy your trip!

San Francisco for dummies?
Personally, if I only had 24 hours I would skip museums and soak up the vibes of the city mostly outdoors. I love the ocean, so spending time at Ocean Beach and/or Lands End to soak up the Pacific Ocean would be on my do-list. For a more up-close view of the Golden Gate Bridge, either the visitor’s center from which you can actually walk into the bridge, or Tunnel Tops park where maybe you’ll just chill and enjoy the view. Golden Gate Park is our pride and joy (we love all of our parks, big and small) but given your limited time, either Twin Peaks or Dolores will give you more of a “landmark” experience. A lot of our neighborhoods have early bedtimes; more things will be open later in parts of the Mission and North Beach and the Marina District. ETA: I’m not sure if you’re able to use the Waymo app, but if you are I highly recommend the novelty of a driverless car ride at least once as well! Don’t waste an hour in line waiting for a cable car but pause to admire them or hop on board if the line isn’t long or you’re at a stop mid route. The $8 is a bit pricey, but it is iconic. r/sanfrancisco on Reddit: What do people *actually* do for fun in San Francisco? (and how far do *you* travel to do it?)
July 25, 2025 -

All of my coworkers are trying to convince me that I'd have a lot more fun if I lived in San Francisco proper (I currently live way out in the tri-valley).

The thing is, when I press them on what there is to do in the city, all these 40-somethings living in Pleasanton can come up with is "night life". That's not a huge draw for me for a number of reasons, mostly because that typically involves having friends to do that with (which I don't yet) or socializing with drunk strangers (I'd rather get sloppy dome from a shark).

So what do you, person who actually lives there, do for fun in San Francisco?

I'm also curious how far you commute to have that fun. Right now its about an hour on Bart + some walking or an uber to get "downtown", and any time I look at reasonably priced places in the peninsula, that number only comes down to maybe 30-40 minutes (which just isn't worth it when it would make my work commute go from 15 minutes to over an hour).

3 days ago - The highly anticipated movie came out on March 1st, and San Francisco is lucky to be home to one of the few theaters that will play the movie in IMAX 70mm. The AMC Metreon 16 in SF is just one of 9 theaters that will host the film in IMAX, so it’s a pretty special viewing experience. ... January 20, 2025 - Lover’s Lane is located in the Presidio of San Francisco Park. There is much more you can explore in this park: trails and nature, fun events, historic sites, and amazing Golden Gate Bridge views. I have only drove across the Golden Gate Bridge and honestly driving across it didn’t do much for me but I’ve been told from friends that walking or biking across it is definitely worth it. If you don’t want to pay a toll, I’d just admire it from one of the many viewpoints in San Francisco!

July 10, 2025 - The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco is a magical place that feels like stepping into a storybook. Built in 1915, it looks like an ancient Roman or Greek ruin with grand columns, a huge dome and a peaceful lagoon often full of swans and ducks. It’s a nice spot to take photos, have a picnic or just walk around enjoying the beauty of the architecture. One of the coolest things about visiting the Palace of Fine Arts is how peaceful it feels, even though it’s right in the middle of a bustling city.

August 8, 2024 - Lombard Street is another famous spot for photos in San Francisco. It’s known as one of the crookedest streets in the world! It’s definitely pretty wacky but I would say it’s worth seeing, especially if you can get there early in the morning or at a time when there’s not too many people around. ...
