It's not the prettiest, but Ikea's Lycksele Lovas is very comfortable. It pulls out as a single piece mattress, so no awkard seams/gaps like you get on the type that fold the back down, and there are enough flat slats that you don't feel them through the mattress as with a lot of other futons of this type. I used it as my bed for 2 summers and had no complaints. It is also very compact, though actually folds out to about the size of a full sized mattress (about 1 inch wider, 1 inch shorter, but full sized sheets work fine). My roommate recently moved out and I decided to convert that room into a guest room/reading room. It’s a small space so I’m looking for a futon/folding sofa type thing to put in there. My requirements are that it be less than 80” wide and actually comfortable to sit on AND sleep on. Does such a product exist? Does anyone have a futon they actually like?

Anyone ever buy a Japanese Futon mattress on a wooden bed frame? And do you need a tatami mat to go underneath?
There are futon bed frames available online....you don't need a tatami...tatami was the original japanese floor (the way we use vinyl or carpet now)…...so the futon way lying directly on the floor... With a frame, you won't need the tatami.. More on reddit.com

Used to do exactly this, before moving on to a heavier duty mattress (less maintenance). If you're already thinking of a Nitori futon, look at their frames, might as well get it all in one place. Just keep in mind that for a futon, you want a slatted underside to allow it to breathe. Most Ikea frames have slatted bases, and Nitori has a number of frames that are specifically designed for using a futon . Don't get a straight up platform type bed (solid surface) or you'll be facing mold and mildew problems. More on reddit.com
