I took in my sister's iPhone 4 to our trusty neighborhood Apple store. The phone was purchased a few months ago and we took it in for a broken sleep/wake button. To our shock, the phone is really 2 years old and is registered to someone else. Nobody at Verizon told us it was refurbished. Additionally the insides have a completely different serial number.
On a scale of 1-10 how bitchy should I be to the sales guy? How does this type of thing happen? Should I have been told that it was refurbished, if they knew?
[Update] A worker at the Preferred Retailer admitted that the employee that sold the phone to me should've given me the option of choosing between a re-certified phone or a new one. The employee is no longer working at that store, for unrelated reasons.
I was directed to the Verizon warranty customer line and am happy to report that a new phone will be sent out to us. I have a feeling I'll be avoiding authorized sellers in the future. Thanks all!
