I recently had some photos printed at Walgreens and they came out at a clearly lower quality than the camera I took them with. I uploaded them as JPEG images as I was told there wasn’t much of a difference between JPEG, TIFF, RAW, etc. when dealing with printers like Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, etc. I got them as 4x6 prints for $0.40 per.
Is it just to be expected that printing at these types of places is going to result in bad pictures ? Or did I mess up in terms of uploading them ?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, such as reputable printers or what I can do in the future to ensure high quality photos.

I wouldn't expect high quality prints from a pharmacy. Check out the wiki for better options.

Walgreens and walmart have dogshit printing quality. If you’re a working professional look for a lab that caters to pros. I haven’t been in the portrait business for a while but back in the day the go-to labs were places like Millers Lab or Bay Photo. If you’re a consumer Mpix is the consumer brand of Millers. Nations Photo Lab is a more economical alternative than the previously mentioned. Quality is not as good but it’s still leagues better than Walgreens or Walmart.
