Get ready for a ton of dms/comments offering to build your site. Realistically the answer varies so much. From cheap 10k. Lots of different details and setups as well can change a lot. My only advice is to have other website examples in mind to set expectations. Perhaps find a local site you like and ask them who they used to build it. Answer from towcar on reddit.com

r/smallbusiness on Reddit: Small business owners: How much did your website cost?
June 8, 2016 -

Hi, two quick questions, hoping to get as many answers as possible.

  1. How much did it cost to get your website created?

  2. How much do you pay to keep it going (monthly or yearly)?

If you're feeling extra helpful, any info you can provide on what your website is like (or even post a link to it) would be ace. For example: Is it ecommerce? Roughly how many pages? Is there anything complex about it such as a 'members log in area' or a 'quote calculator'.

Thanks!

I'll try and answer this from a web developer point of view, as well as from a hopefully (soon to be) entrepreneur. In today's day and age, unless you're willing to blow huge amount of money on a website's design, getting a website built from scratch is something I never recommend to people/customers. The cost for a well made / stable website design and/or website platform (code wise, as in the a custom written blog for example) is astonishing. Can easily go up mid 5 figures. What I always recommend is to start a website on WordPress. It's easy to maintain, even by the customer, and can easily be scaled (to some extent, obviously). There's a billion websites out there teaching people how to use the platform, and plenty of developers specialized in WP. As for the design, stick with ThemeForest. The ROI on a $50 template vs 4-5k it cost to build a similar one is incredible.

This is a bit like asking "How much do you spend on fuel." It really depends on the company size and need. A single stay-at-home freelancer is going to spend less on fuel than an multi-billion dollar international airline. Similarly, their website needs will be different, and so will the cost of development and maintenance. Websites can be as cheap as a few hundred dollars for setup for a couple static pages, needing $10/month to maintain, if no code or content changes are regularly needed. They can also cost $1,000,000 to develop and require $150,000/month to maintain of it is a huge site supporting millions of interactions and has frequent code and content changes and requires an active digital strategy to keep it on the top of the list. This is small business, so you are probably not in the 6 figure range, but even a small website can cost quite a bit if it still needs to fit a specific requirement and needs to be scalable and stable. A lot of people will tell you to do it yourself for free, and you certainly could with only your time as a cost. But, you get what you pay for. You could probably "build" your own race-car and get it to start or move down the driveway, but would you put it through the Indy 500? It really all depends on need.
