Dumb question; didn't Kotaku sucked and we hated them for buying/destroying all the decent sites a while back? I could have sworn I should be happy about this 'cept for the people put out of work. ... Yes. The devil's in the details. They were probably losing their shirts being a news site. With all the YouTube content that is out there now there's probably 10 videos up in 10 minutes whenever something actually happens that's newsworthy. Hard to ... More on forum.beyond3d.com

Why do people hate Kotaku?
Well, it IS part of the Gawker Media empire, and as you said, they have clickbait titles on a lot of their stories. The site itself likely also catches flack for the Kinja commenting system, a hallmark of the current Gawker Media Empire. I used to go on Jalopnik, Deadspin and Gawker much more than I do now (February 2012-ish,) and when they did their major redesign they pooped all over the commenters. Previously, if you were new to the site you could't just go and post " shitcock " without posting something else worthy of getting 'approved' first by another (starred) commenter. Nowadays, you can create burner accounts and tell all your "friends" about how your cousin's wife makes a bajillion dollars a month by working from home. Without any consequence. It tends to dial up the noise in commenting section. As a result, the commenting community on all of Gawker has suffered (to varying degrees). As for recently, I don't have any direct knowledge of any shenanigans. More on reddit.com

Game over for Kotaku, Lifehacker and Gizmodo. Is this truly the end of Australian gaming journalism? | Jackson Ryan | The Guardian
January 15, 2025 - Ten years later I landed a job at the video game and culture website Kotaku Australia and its sister sites, Lifehacker and Gizmodo. Those brands kickstarted my career. Now those brands are no more. On Monday Nineโ€™s Pedestrian Group, which licensed the trio of titles from US owners, announced it would be shuttering all three, in addition to Vice and Refinery29.
