November 1. After Carpenter's October 18 episode, the show will take a week off. When SNL returns for another three weeks of new episodes, Miles Teller will host with Musical Guest Brandi Carlile. Hi.
I'm a non-American who got into SNL last year. I've just noticed that there won't be an episode this week so I checked the airing dates for previous seasons to see if this a pattern. Turns out it is. Almost every season SNL takes a hiatus after either the third or the fourth episode. Does anybody know why? Thanks.

The work schedule for each SNL episode's week is famously grueling, since they pretty much build the entire show from scratch each week. They are regularly writing, editing, building sets, and filming deep into the night from Tuesday until the show airs on Saturday night. Basically, this work pace is not sustainable for more than about 3 or 4 weeks in a row, so they never schedule more than 3 or 4 episodes in a row without giving them a week or two of break afterwards.

The answer about the grueling schedule is a good answer but it’s simpler than that, NBC orders 20-22 episodes a year for SNL. The average full season order for a network show. It’s budgeted to do 20-22 episodes a year. The network season runs from Sept-May, so they need to stretch 22 episodes into however many weeks there are between Sept-May.
