They try to find the words to describe this intense feeling of dislike, and ultimately they decide that it is “loathing.” ... Probably the hardest song for me to write was “What is This Feeling?” I made four earlier tries at a song for that spot in the show, the first two entitled “Bad Situation” (as in, “I’ve got to make the best of a bad situation”) and one called “Far Be It From Me”, in which Galinda and Elphaba were viciously critical of one another while pretending to be polite.

November 22, 2024 - Give us that inner monologue/writing a letter moment to tell us the reasons they wish to overcome this "challenge" I do love the differences and acting choices, Ariana adding much more drama and exaggeration to Glinda "YEAH WELL MY FACE IS FLUSHING!" ... By far my favorite song/scene in the movie. I replay it at least 3 times every time i watch the movie ... A place for discussion about all things Wicked.

September 26, 2025 - While many musical scores employ new motifs and melodies for each song with little overlap, Schwartz integrated a handful of leitmotifs throughout the production. Some of these motifs indicate irony—for example, when Glinda presents Elphaba with a "ghastly" hat in "Dancing Through Life", the score reprises a theme from "What Is this Feeling?" a few scenes earlier. Two musical themes in Wicked run throughout the score.

March 16, 2025 - The song’s lighthearted portrayal of intense dislike is also filled with subtext. The strong emotions they express in their loathing may hint at deeper, more complex feelings, including a possible sexual attraction.
