Hello, how are you?

I understand that you would like to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro and use your new digital license for activation.

In that case, I suggest you first try to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro using generic Windows upgrade key.

After that, Windows should identify the linked license in your email and automatically activate.

  1. Press Windows+I to access Windows settings, then access Update and security -> Activation;
  2. Click on Change Product Key, if it requests UAC permissions click on Yes;
  3. Enter the key below and click the Start Upgrade button:

VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

  1. Wait for the Windows 10 Pro upgrade process to finish, the system will probably restart a few times.

After finishing the update, access the settings again and check the activation.

Avoid the Windows 10/11 Home to Pro upgrade on the Microsoft Store, as it gets you far less rights than an actual Pro key
I've been activating Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8.0 and 7 installs for many, many years with the same pool of keys I was able to buy really cheap a long time ago when Windows 7 first came out. Since Microsoft stopped accepting old keys, I immediately hit a wall after a recent re-install. None of the keys I had, even unused ones, would activate anything. I had to sign into my Microsoft account and "transfer" a digital license from another system in order to activate the new install. I felt so powerless. For the first time in 15 years I'm not loaded with extra Windows keys. The "digital license" versions of Windows 11/10 keys are all I have now. When I signed in to activate, it listed several other systems (via their name I had given them), allowing me to de-activate old activations in order to transfer the digital license to the new install. You're saying that you can't transfer paid Microsoft Store licenses when Microsoft let me transfer "free" upgrades tied to my account? More on reddit.com

r/Windows10 on Reddit: Avoid the Windows 10/11 Home to Pro upgrade on the Microsoft Store, as it gets you far less rights than an actual Pro key
January 16, 2024 -

Purchasing this upgrade does not give you a Windows 10/11 Pro key outright, but instead merely gives you a "digital license" to Pro attached to your Microsoft account. Unfortunately, this severely complicates reinstalls, and worse, at least in my case, Microsoft straight up lost my digital license attached to my account.

I purchased a full-priced Windows 10 Home retail license from the Microsoft Store back in 2016, for which I received a Windows 10 home key that I used across a couple of machines over the years. Last year, I decided to upgrade my license to Windows 10 Pro, and purchased the $100 upgrade off the Microsoft store. The upgrade worked, and I was running Windows 10 Pro successfully.

2 days ago, my Windows suddenly was no longer activated. I tried to reactivate it in Activation settings (using my old Home key, logging into my Microsoft account that I used to purchase the Pro upgrade, and claiming that I changed my hardware). Today, I spent north of 3 hours with Activation Support on the phone, and having them do remote support (where they tried numerous command line tricks), and 3 separate support techs were unable to activate my Windows 10 Pro again (even though they acknowledged that they could see my account had purchased the Pro upgrade). We tried downgrading to Home and using the generic 10 Pro key to upgrade back to Pro with no luck either. I also attempted a clean install of Home and upgrading that to Pro, and deactivating all my machines on my Microsoft account, but with no dice. It seems the Pro upgrade I had purchase was straight up lost.

I eventually gave up and just bought a Windows 11 Pro retail license outright and used that to activate my machine. I suppose that frees up my old Windows 10 Home retail key for another machine, but I just straight up lost the $100 I paid for the Pro upgrade on that.

I suppose the lesson is to either buy a retail Pro license outright (either originally, or if you plan to upgrade from Home), as you will receive an actual product key that transfers across machines. Despite costing more in the end (Home retail + Pro upgrade is $240, while buying retail Pro in the first place is $200), the Pro upgrade gets you far less rights, including the apparent inability to transfer your Pro upgrade to another machine even if you're upgrading a retail Home key, and you run the very real risk of Microsoft losing your upgrade rights as they did with me (even though I didn't change my hardware). Lesson learned I suppose.

Because I've never received any media(CD/DVD/USB/Download URL) from Microsoft when upgrading from 7 Home Premium to 10 Home to 10 Pro nor did I see any product keys from Microsoft for 10 Home or 10 Pro. The only thing I received was the order history on my Microsoft account that has the order number, date of purchase and the amount I paid for Windows 10 Pro upgrade.

Your product key is connected to your hardware. Since you upgraded an OEM copy of Windows 7 Home, you received the rights to Windows 10 Home, which you upgraded to an OEM copy of Windows 10 Professional.

At this point if you wanted to install Windows 10 Professional you would just install it, since you don't have to worry about the installer finding the wrong key ( i.e. Windows 8.1 Core instead of Windows 8.1 Professional ), when ask for a license key you simply skip that step.

If I want to reinstall from scratch I have to start from Windows 7 Home Premium, then upgrade to 10 Home(which was free but isn't anymore), then again up to Windows 10 Pro(using my purchased license I've never seen). Which means, they said, I have to buy Windows 10 Home now to be able to reinstall from scratch.

You interpreted what they said incorrectly. You can indeed install Windows 7 Home, then upgrade to Windows 10 Home for FREE, since Windows 10 ISOs are 100% free. This is possible because your machine has had Windows 10 Home installed on it before. Of course doing this is a waste of time, since Windows 10 Professional was also activated on your machine, you can simply install that.

I can't burn ISO of Windows 10 Pro to a media and install it right away because they said it's an "upgrade key" not full retail license of Windows 10 Pro.

They gave you incorrect information. I don't know what question you literally asked them, it appears you are not clear how Windows 10 itself activates, so lets just move on.

ther rep said: my Windows 7 Home Premium key has been upgraded to Windows 10 Pro key, and that I can use that key on the sticker on my computer to install Windows 10 Pro from scratch via burned ISO on a media.

This is false. A key to one version of Windows 7 cannot install an entirely different version of Windows 10. Windows 7 Home activated before the the offer expired, Windows 10 Home installations, that is all it activated.

Since your machine activation status is tied to a digital entitlement. You can only use a single installation of Windows on this machine unless you provide it an entirely different license key.

Any tool, you normally would use to determine your license key, will return a generic key. It's possible you can get the Windows 10 Professional key, after its been activated, again this will automatically happen since its tied to your hardware.

if I want to reinstall Windows 10 Pro operating system from scratch(without using Reset PC or Refresh PC, just please ignore this option for now) what will I do when prompted for license during reinstallation/activation phase?

You do understand that if you use the Reset feature, the end result is IDENTICAL, to formatting your machine and installing Windows 10 Professional right?

As for a program that might be able to get the correct key for your installation, the only key I have ever known to work, is ShowKeyPlus
