The hard drive vs SSD makes the biggest difference, even on the other Windows machine you have. Even a "turd" with a Celeron type processor and 4GB of RAM will run decent with a SSD but awful on a HDD. Windows is more demanding overall than Linux, but you don't need to go crazy to have a good experience. I do recommend getting at least 8GB of RAM, but 16 if budget allows, along with an i5/i7 processor. SSD is a must, 256GB at the minimum but if budget allows then go for 512GB+. Cheap machines often cut corners like having terrible screens, awful keyboards/trackpads or build quality issues, but it sounds like you are going the desktop route so that shouldn't be too much of a concern. Well your CPU is 14 years old. This is not unusual. You might try your chances with Rufus modified iso that removes hardware requirements but it’s not 100% guaranteed. Who knows how Microsoft handle this in the future. An update could restore the requirement. On the other side, it’s a quad core CPU with a relatively slow boost clock. I mainly use Linux these days, but unfortunately there are still a few things that I need Windows for. My current Windows 10 PC is very old and more or less unusable. If I haven't used it for a few weeks it sometimes takes many hours just to boot.
What is the lowest spec I could get away with to have a reasonably well-functioning Windows 11 system? I will mainly use it for editing particular documents where there is no Linux editor available. I might also use it for music editing (FL studio), but that is just a hobby. I'm not a gamer, so I don't need a fancy graphics card.
I couple of years ago I made the mistake of upgrading my wife's PC with a very cheap windows box (about £300 new). It runs but it is painfully slow. I really wish I has spent a bit more. I don't want to make the same mistake again.
I will definitely get as SSD this time that should improve things. What processor and RAM will I need to have a system that just runs normally?

I'm guessing I'm going to need a new processor to upgrade to Windows 11, but i don't understand why, when the requirements says 1 ghz or faster with 2 or more cores.
