Up until a little while ago, my youtube app didn't show ads when I paused the video. I don't update my youtube app and I have automatic updates disabled. How did this feature get on my device?

YouTube isn't a local media player program like VLC that you control, it is an online website/app. They can change whatever they want whenever they want on their systems. Same as most stuff now. If you want to control your software, you have to use offline software and not go online.

I pay for YouTube premium and I just hate the new update. The biggest thing is the mini player inside the app, it used to be a bar at the bottom of the screen like in Spotify, a swipe down closes the video, a swipe up opens the large player. Now I just get this floating window that's obstructing more content and closing it is a nightmare, you either need to press the X or swipe it down but that is harder than it sounds - I need to try like 3 or 4 times before it closes... Also sometimes the main player just freezes and I can't press the pause button, what's up with that?

The only thing I actually like about the update is that it asked me if I want to see less shorts.

Omg thanks for mentioning this, yes, YouTube in mobile sucks so much, not only for the floating video or the bugs, but the new icons design on shorts and all

Another issue: miniplayer vanishes but the audio continues, seriously Youtube just made their app worse, it feels like they didn't even test it properly.

A bit over a year ago, I noticed that when I went to update my apps in the play store, a problem kept appearing with YouTube: "couldn't update". It was strange but ultimately didn't matter. This was until the last month or so, when YouTube required the user to update the app in order to access the main page. So in order to use the app, I need to update it, which I can't do.

What have I tried? First idea was to reinstall the app, but I can't do that because YouTube was preinstalled with Android. The next idea was to clear my cache and memory in the app. This did work, but only the first time I tried it. I closed the app, reopened it, and was back to where I was. Clearing cache/memory has not worked since then either.

So now I'm stumped, and I'm forced to use the browser version of YouTube. Google's help page is super shallow about this issue as well. Anyone have any ideas? Additionally, why could it be that the app isn't able to update?

You can try to uninstall the youtube app by downloading Shizuku and canta(Search it on YouTube and you will get 100s of tutorial) after that maybe try to install yt again from play store or download the yt app from apk mirror/uptodown/apk pure.
