I have a project with requires about 70 pieces of 1/8" thick wood, 5.5"x7.25", plus a few other pieces. Basically, I need a 4x8 sheet's worth of 1/8" wood.
Home depot sells 4x8 sheets of 1/8" thick hardboard which would work but wouldn't be as nice. I could redesign the whole project to use 1/4" material but that would be a pain and it would end up larger than I'd like.
So, is it possible to find sheets of 1/8" wood? If so, where should I be looking? Or should I just use hardboard? Is MDF an option?
Cost is a factor. Also, I don't really know what I'm doing so feel free to make other suggestions.

Hi Reddit, we’re installing 500 square feet of Lifeproof (Home Depot) Luxury Vinyl Plank floors downstairs in our ~20 year old house. The kitchen previously had roll on sheet vinyl stapled down onto 1/4” lauan plywood (still in very good condition), which is on top of the osb subfloor. The living room previously had carpet direct on the subfloor (Osb), and the small entryway and half bath had really ugly cheap hardwood. I’m tearing out the sheet vinyl, carpet, and hardwood. This would leave the kitchen area 1/4” higher than the living room and entry.
I want the LVP to be continuous and level throughout. The subfloor is in pretty good condition, and level except for the 1/4” step from raw subfloor to lauan plywood over the subfloor in the kitchen.
I’ve received conflicting advice. Should I tear out the lauan in the kitchen, or add some to the living room and entry? I definitely don’t want a transition strip or height difference there.

I put life proof in my house and did the 1/4" hard wood under it. Lauan isnt rated for flooring applications... at least the crap sold as lauan here in va isnt but id put it down for ease, easier to put more down than pull other stuff up especially if po glued it

I’d definitely vote lauan. We just did our entire house in SPC luxury vinyl planks. And had some inconsistencies when installing on our 3rd level (1st level was on concrete and 2nd level installed over existing hardwood). Our 3rd level had MANY inconsistencies when it came to height variation between pieces of OSB. In a few places, we used a flexible floor leveling product by DAP (sold at Lowe’s) which helped tremendously in a few very low spots. The lauan sheets went right overtop all the patching and honestly felt great to walk on. No more significant dips or buckling. Made laying down the SPC a breeze. If you do go with lauan, get it from a lumber supply company (Tw Perry, Tart, etc.) A few notes I will share: When installing lauan, you don’t need to go crazy with the mailing/stapling. Some of the pieces we pulled up had nails every 3” all the way across the sheet. I’d do every 6” around three perimeter and a few in the middle. Get a long level or straight edge that you can run across your subfloor to detect inconsistencies in height between sections of OSB. You may need to use leveling compound or modify/replace sections of OSB (leveling compound is easier for sure). When considering leveling compound, get something that will dry and remain flexible. The ready to mix stuff in 40/50lb bags won’t work well on wood subfloors, as the leveler will crack as the subfloor flexes. This is a time to thoroughly walk your area and get rid of any creaking noises that exist in your subfloor. Use a nail gun or 1-1/4” screws to lockdown the affected areas.

Is it just me or has the price of Lauan, like everything else, skyrocketed to the point where it's no longer affordable? I'm pricing out a relatively straight forward build but I'm struggling to find 1/8 lauan anywhere and 1/4 lauan is taking up almost half of my set budget! At nearly $30 for a 4x8 sheet, I really don't find it to be an affordable option for a school building sets on a $1000 budget. Is there something that people are shifting to that will be as workable and durable for our needs but still affordable on a tight budget? Also, where do people get 1/8 lauan anymore? My local lumber suppliers only carry it in 1/4.

Soft cover the flats with muslin. After a very quick search I found pricing around 10-12 dollars per 4x8 flat. I'm sure you could get that number down with the right supplier.

Don’t know all the details of what you’re making but as has been pointed out, wood has gotten expensive, and while I’ve seen some dimensional lumber come down sheet goods are staying high near me. Step 1 in a low budget setting is going to be recycling old material. In an educational setting I’ve had sets with a $0 material budget using just stock parts and scraps from past shows. Not every group can keep a huge amount stored but if you want to cut costs long term that’s #1 Step 2 is sitting down with your designer about what your making. They should be aware of the scope of the project and if you need 16+ new sheets of lauan it might be over-designed for this school’s setting. Again I don’t know what your situation is, a few suggestions to source material could be to reach out to a local (independently owned) lumber yard to discuss special rates or donations in return for a posted acknowledgment if you are in an educational setting as it sounds; Switching to a material like canvas or muslin could be less expensive but you need to decide if it works in your situation.
