I have vinyl siding on my current house and hate it. Stuff cracks stupid easily in the cold. Accidentally kicked the corner trim on my garage one winter and cracked the crap out of it. I would get hardie in the front at least. Then you can do vinyl lap around the rest. The vinyl batten looks and feels super plastic (surprise... because it is) up close. You can get away with it on gables, but you'll dislike the look and feel if it's right next to your front door

Hello everyone, i am currently looking to build a 2700 square foot home and am talking to some builders.
I am hoping to crowd source some opinions as i do not have anyone else I could bounce ideas off of.
My first question is regarding the price difference between plank horizontal siding vs board and batten sidingboard. I was told B&b siding costs double. Is that true? I would have guessed brick to maybe be double, not B&b though.

We are adding a large addition to home shortly, and they are replacing the siding of the home in the process. I would really like to have the vertical lined siding I.e. board and batten instead of the horizontal traditional vinyl siding we currently have, but only if we can do it budget friendly, otherwise we will just go with traditional siding. Wondering what options there are and how much more it would cost to do it, if anyone has compared prices recently.

Can't say I know if there's much of a difference in terms of price but we went with board and batten vinyl on our new construction and couldn't be happier. Horizontal vinyl to me is just plain and boring. We even went 2 tone (white and charcoal) which gives it a neat modern yet traditional look https://imgur.com/a/NU83d0Y

Figure about 4 bucks per ft2 in material for James Hardie Panel + Batten. Superior to vinyl in every way IMO. You also can modulate the batten spacing with this system as opposed to being locked in to an 8” pattern or whatever it is with a vinyl product. It’s a 4x8 or 4x10 panel that’s mounted vertically with battens glued or nailed on to the surface
