I have vinyl siding on my current house and hate it. Stuff cracks stupid easily in the cold. Accidentally kicked the corner trim on my garage one winter and cracked the crap out of it. Pain to replace that peice. Also a pain to attach anything to the house. I would take Hardie board over vinyl any day. Answer from TorturedChaos on reddit.com

Vinyl board and batten siding questions | Contractor Talk - Professional Construction and Remodeling Forum
If any of you have done B&B vinyl, what is to say you can't lap it just like horizontal, I am thinking a couple of quick cuts so it can lap just like horizontal. The B&B only comes in 10' lengths. Side note, the only place I have to do that would require this is on the back and won't be seen, it's 12 wide and about 16 tall (shed type gable). thanks for any insight, dave ... just did board and batten recently, Instead of a jay on the bottom I used a drip edge, you can buy it or bend it like I did, and I screwed the b and b directly to it.

r/Homebuilding on Reddit: Vertical Vinyl Siding
June 27, 2024 -

Hi everyone,

We recently finished our build, and while the process was mostly great, our siding experience was less than desirable. The crew rarely showed when they said they would, and their work wasn’t what I would consider up to par.

Since the install of vertical siding on the front of the house, we’ve had consistent issues with “bubbling” in areas. Initially, it was only a few pieces, and the company sent the crew back up to replace them. The same ones bubbled again, and the company said they would no longer replace them.

Fast forward a month or two, and nearly all the siding is bubbling. From your experience, what is could be causing this, and what recourse do I have? The company has already been paid.

A little background:

The company is a large exterior company in a local city. The installers are one of their subs. The company provided the material and the subs to install. This was not a crew that my builder chose.

How to Use Board-and-Batten Vinyl Siding
CraneBoard® Solid Core Siding® comes in a board-and-batten profile with a 10” on-center batten for a more robust look, and its Double 10” design means fewer panels to install. The wider batten is made possible by CraneBoard’s insulated backing, which adds greater rigidity, more thermal resistance, and a more robust appearance. Both board-and-batten siding options feature Chromatix technology that helps keep colors from fading. Like any board-and-batten application, pre-planning your board-and-batten vinyl siding is critical to ensure an aesthetically pleasing result.

If this isn’t doable, what material would get me a longer life without breaking the bank? Is there an inexpensive solution out there other than just buying some wood/cement board and going to town? Thanks for your time! ... Why would you want to take an almost maintenance free siding and replace it with something that will always need work. No, plywood will not work. February 22, 2024 - In fact, board-and-batten vinyl siding offers some installation advantages over fiber cement board-and-batten: Namely, with full profiles and an integrated nailing hem, there’s no need to cut battens, no extra prep work to hide nails behind battens, and no worries about water getting behind the battens. Plus, you’ll have fewer penetrations into the wall envelope. Westlake Royal Building Products™ offers board-and-batten vinyl siding options in two design options: a 7” o.c. batten and a 10” o.c.
