You don't have much space to work with but as someone who just renod a 5x8 As you enter, to the right is the sink. It'll be the most used water source Further right is the toilet To the left that occupies the "8" is the shower tub + storage if possible (mine has the storage outside the bathroom but it's a part of the 8) I'm not sure where your window is but mine faces the door. r/bathrooms on Reddit: 5x8 Bathroom Remodel - What is the Best Layout Option?
June 20, 2025 -

The most common bathroom size in most homes is 5x8, and honestly, most remodels completely miss the mark when it comes to storage and function.

Builders usually default to the same layout, and this is typically what I see in every remodel.
30" vanity, 36" toilet space, and a 30" tub.
Sometimes you’ll see a 36" vanity squeezed in, some have drawers and some have doors only, and the toilet gets the short end with only 30" of clearance. But the tub? That always stays the same.

Things to think about that are desirable:

  • Storage: Increasing usable storage

  • Size: Make it feel bigger

  • Use: Guest bath, kid bath, aging parent or shared

  • Moisture control: Especially important when multiple people are using the room.

  • Vibe: Calm and serene in a small space

Looking for real-life function here. What layout have you seen (or used) that works best in a 5x8?
Would love to hear what others have done!

I’m currently in the middle of a 5 x 8 bathroom renovation. Small house and no way to increase the size so it’s quite limited as to what we can do and the budget is tight. Plumbing for vanity and toilet supply were both outside of the wall so I moved those into the wall to clean things up a little and give more room in the vanity trying to claim back all the space I can. The ceiling is 8ft high over the bathtub area so I added in a skylight to increase the height along with improved lighting. It opens so will work as additional venting. I’m replacing the 8” high sliding window with a 12” high single light awning to improve lighting and make it feel bigger. Otherwise, 30” wide bathtub with a niche under the window to keep bottles organized. Toilet is shorter at 26” vs the 32” that was there so give slightly more room. Vanity will be drawers and more functional than what was there. Adding a medicine cabinet for increased storage as it was previously just a mirror on the wall. Improving lighting and all finishes are being upgraded. Solid core door replacing the cheap builder grade door. Insulated all walls. Still a work in progress so no finished photos yet.
