r/mechmarket on Reddit: [GB] 60% Wood keyboard cases, lots of options available for customization
January 21, 2024 -

Hi everyone! My name is Sarah and I make wood keyboard cases. A little background about me, I am a mechanical designer/cnc programmer by trade, with a degree in industrial/furniture design.

A little while ago, I noticed that there aren't many wood cases available, and ones that are, don't have many customization options.

With my cases, I'm offering 3 different wood types, 3 different top edge profiles, and 2 different accent metals. 18 possible combinations (only 3 are shown below).

Product Photos

Wood Type: Walnut, Cherry, or Maple

Top Edge Profile: Chamfered, Rounded, or Flat

Accent Material: Brass or Aluminum

Link to my website for the GB: https://nulldesignco.com/

More Details:

All cases are tray mount, and high profile. They are flat (not slanted), but have holes in the bottom to mount screw-in standard feet (those aluminum ones you see online).

They have the standard 6 mounting places, and will fit 60% pcb's that fit in a Tofu60 case.

The standoffs in the case are 4mm high, so the case is compatible with most batteries. The standoffs can also be removed or replaced with shorter/higher ones if needed.

All cases are finished with Danish oil and include standoffs, screws (PCB and foot-mounting), o-rings, and rubber feet.

This GB is just for 60% cases, although I have plans to expand to include 65% and other sizes (and potentially an o-ring mounting style?) in the near future. GB started on January 15th and will run for a month, and then I will close it and begin production. The product page on my website will show updates. Please expect to wait 6-8 weeks after the GB closes to receive your case.

If you need social proof I'm good for the GB, I currently run a fairly successful Etsy shop (link is Here or in my bio). Though I'm in the process now of phasing it out so I can focus on these cases.

If you have any questions, or feedback about things you like/don't like, feel free to message me here on Reddit or on my website.

Hello! Community Iโ€™m hoping this will be seen by knowledgeable people. Iโ€™m looking to swap my GK61 keyboard case I donโ€™t like the the feel of the plastic so I decided to look for an alternative. Problem is that I just started diving into customizing keyboards and learning all about it. I donโ€™t know any good resources too look for cases and parts how ever I did find someone who has a Navy blue case exactly how I imagine my to be. https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=106138.0. <โ€” LINK. So basically if anyone knows of websites or even has a recommendation for a navy blue keyboard case please let me know Iโ€™m super eager to start learning more about this and eager to start making my keyboard my own. Thank you hope to hear from you guys soon!

r/MechanicalKeyboards on Reddit: Features/Dimensions for a 60% case

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone has a safe next few days coming with the holiday season and new year upon us. As I have a little bit of free time (in between family gatherings and so forth), I was thinking of playing around with making a 60% case with my 3D printing and casting resources.

I used the SwillKB web app and the keyboard layout creator to get a Standard 60% sandwich pattern, and re-created its dimensions in my CAD drawings.

At the moment, I made the bottom solid plate 5mm thick, the bottom ring with the middle (centered) USB port socket hole 10mm thick, and then a full closed ring 5mm thick, for a recommended (by Matt30 on his thread on custom cases at Deskthority) to be 15mm internal space.

I also made the bezel 10mm wide to accomodate 5mm holes for screws/bolts.

Now, this was all from someone in r/mk here saying I should take a crack at making a case, something similar to the TEX 60% Alum cases, especially with the hole for the Dip switches. I am not knocking off the TEX style with internal ridges and screw supports, but rather starting off simple with a design to suit a 60% plate with 10cm side and top widths, as possibly created by the SwillKB application.

Now, the questions I have:

  1. Where should this dip switch hole be positioned? Should I not bother and people would be able to drill out the hole themselves?

  2. Should I not put in any screw/bolt holes, and people could tap their own through the bevel?

  3. If I put the screw/bolt holes in, how many screw/bolt holes should I put in? 4? 7? 8?

  4. Is 5mm too big? small?

  5. Would people be able to/be willing to generate and get their own plates to match? Or would I also have to create plates to suit as a bundle?

Thought I'd gather some thoughts and opinions before I get down to actually attempting the physical creation part....

Thanks~

Hello! Ive never been a fan of keyboard cases with an angle, and I was wondering if I could find a case anywhere that Didnt have an angle, or slope to the design! I prefer using detachable feet for my keyboard :) Preferrably NOT sandwich, I would like to change my plate frequently

So I'm collecting the bits to build my first custom mech. I have a GH60 and a plate from 1Up. I ordered Zeal 67g's and a set of MOD-L's because I couldn't make up my mind. Got some Zeal screw-in stabs as well as some Cherry gold stabs also because I couldn't make up my mind. So clearly I'm on the path to build two boards, eventually. I love 60% but wanted to try something different than my 3 Pok3r's and 2 Leo's (660M + 660C).

That said, I'd love to find a case that has a higher side wall than the Pok3r so the keys are partially sunken below the top of the case. I love the look of that more than the Pok3r's "floating key" thing it has going.

1Up has some cases that look great, plenty of color options, but no real pictures of what a board using the case would look like complete. Also interested in other recommendations (preferably that don't have me waiting for 3-6 months for a GB to show up and get out to me).

So I'd love to hear suggestions - what 60% cases should I look at? I prefer metal over plastic and probably plastic over acrylic (I don't mind the HHKB and Leopold cases at all - in fact I like the sound that they provide, especially the Topres). But I"m open to anything, really.

I recently built a XD60 within the Stainless bent case/plate with gateron switches and OEM PBT keycaps. It's rock solid but I find that the whole board is a bit "tall" at the front. At least taller than what I am used to. Are there any "thin" cases that would bring a standard 60% PCB close to the table at the front?

Has anyone created a base plate as a minimalistic case from a piece of 1/4" wood and carved the necessary spaces for the USB connector and leds. What would this look like? I imagine this as ending-up as an open design where there would be a gap between the wooden back plate, the pcb and the back plate.

If you know of any good examples, I sure would like to see pictures. I googled and searched here but I can't seem to find comparable examples; with the exception of the Gherkin with a PCB bottom plate.

Right now I am trying to build my first mech keyboard and I want a high quality case.

What do you guys think is the nicest 60% case right now? I have a budget of under or around $200, so if they could be near that price range it would be great!

Im looking to upgrade the stock wooting 60he. Iโ€™ve already got gateron jades which are great but now i think the only other change people really recommend is the case. Im either seeing the alumaze or tofu60 but is there other cheaper case options that still elevate the experience?

Also i travel w this board to work so will the heavier cnc cases worsen that experience and should i just leave it stock?

If left stock or put in a new case what are some mods people recommend?
