Is there a specific reason you don’t want to overclock? To answer your question: of course you’re leaving performance off the table. Enabling EXPO and doing a PBO CO offset are two of the easiest options to enable ever that result in good performance increases. Also, enabling PBO and setting a CO doesn’t necessarily raise voltages. In fact, like many AMD engineers have said “Undervolting is the new overclocking”. Most people utilize PBO algorithms to set CO offsets in the negative, reducing voltages across all cores on the CCD. For example, mine is stable at -23 all core. PBO sets an offset for given voltages across the curve, reducing how much each core draws to maintain certain clock speeds. Less voltage for the same performance reduces operating temperatures. Ryzen, for every 10C or so you take off of the temperature, the algorithm likes to boost 100Mhz or so in addition. For example, if you are hitting 85C with effective clock speeds of 4,750Mhz all core, that’s essentially the max you’ll get. While 89C is the max, X3D chips like to stay a few degrees below the max. However, if you were to change your cooling solution, say an AIO or liquid cooling, and all of a sudden your CPU is only hitting 75C when boosting to 4,750, it will then boost up to 4,850Mhz (which will also raise the temps up from 75C of course) So basically, by setting a negative offset, what you are doing is reducing the temps and increasing your performance. Where your CPU might have only boosted to 4,800Mhz all core, it may now boost to 4,850 or 4,900, or maybe even 4,950Mhz. Depends on your CPU, depends on the silicon and the cores and how strong of an offset you can set. While this is undervolting and not “overclocking” in the colloquial way we use the term, it is considered “””overclocking””” by AMD. However, despite what any warnings say, nobody would be able to tell you enabled it, and it will not void your warranty. I would definitely try PBO advanced w/ a negative offset. -10 is super safe. -15 should work mostly as well. However, with my 5800X3D, I stopped setting the offset. The 100 MHz up or down did not yield anything meaningful for games and it was a hassle to use a 3rd party tool to do PBO.

My goal is to keep my system completely stock, no overclocking and within AMD spec. Like my RAM speed for example I want to keep it at 5200mt/s as that is what AMD officially supports as the max for this chip.

But what I'm confused about is what exactly is considered "not an overclock" by AMD with the 7800x3D. Do I just keep the standard "Core Performance Boost" enabled and let the single core clock boost to 5Ghz as that is what is in the specs for the chip, or should I still look at enabling PBO? It's not clear to me if enabling PBO is actually considered an "overclock" and I've tried Googling this (and searching here) without a clear answer. Using Curve Optimizer does seem to be out of the question as I'm looking for a completely stable system and I don't like the idea of possible instabilities with undervolting (which is overclocking or maybe it isn't with this chip?).

Just looking for clarity on this. My understanding, which could be wrong, is that PBO is lifting some limits to increase the voltage to get a higher clock speed as long as the power and thermal overhead are available to it. On paper it does read like an "overclock", but considering the CPU at stock dynamically changes frequency under load I am not sure either. So if this isn't considered an "overclock" then I would enable it if there's room for performance gain but otherwise all I really care about is stability and not overclocking.

New AMD user here. Upgraded from a 9900k to a 7800x3D. I have experience overclocking the Intel platforms from various generations. Very new to AMD stuff.

Heard PBO Curve editor could potentially squeeze out some extra performance by undervolting... but will I really notice a real world difference if I don't have problems with temps?

Don't really want to have a run in with messing with system stability for a 1-2% gain in overall performance/fps in games.

I use a Noctua NH-D15 and on Cinebench stress tests I hit max 70C on all cores at stock. No PBO set. Only thing set is EXPO for RAM

7800X3D is a very hot CPU by design (both VF curve and the fact how the 3D cache is stacked on top instead of below the substrate, such as in the 9800X3D). If you arent hitting 85C with cinebench, something is off. How are your scores? Now I see you understand PBO undervolts so you boost longer, always trying to reach max allowed temps. First try to reach that temp, then start the Curve Optimizer or Curve Shaper (better IMO) journey. Also, please keep in mind, it isnt overclocking per se, you’re just tweaking your cpu to run at the limit for longer. 9800X3D boosts all cores at 5.25Ghz whereas 7800X3D only does so for some cores and at a 5.05Ghz. Edit: check LLC.

I wouldn't worry about it, spending hours tuning PBO and CO gives you like 3% more FPS in CPU bound titles on a 7800X3D.. if you want to tinker then go for it but you'll be spending hours playing with CoreCycler and Cinebench instead of actual games..

Anyway, you can try these changes. Change PBO (Precision Boost Overdie) to Enabled. Change Precision Boost Scaler to Manual, and set it at 10x.

I'm very confused on what I need to do just to get a basic overclock on my 7800x3d to get it from 4.2 to closer to its rated 5.0 speed. I have PBO enabled under advanced/amd overclocking in my bios on my rog strix x670e-e, but hardware monitor in the Asus x670e-e bios still says its at 4200 MHz. How can I see my actual max MHz limit? Is the limit actually closer to ~5.0 now that I have PBO enabled even though it still says 4.2 in the Asus bios?

It should boost to 5GHz by itself. Edit (curve optimiser, a sub menu of PBO) is for if you want the CPU to draw less / more power at a given frequency for overclocking/ undervolting. It isn't required. If you have power settings set to power saver or eco in windows it can stop the CPU boosting to its max frequency though. Go into your power settings and make sure its set to performance / high performance. Edit: it probably won't be just sat at 5GHz if you're on the desktop, mine sits at 4.2 until I run a game then it goes to its boost frequency.

I don't see why you would want to do this. The whole point of getting a 7800X3D is to get the max performance possible while gaming. I run my 7800X3D with PBO and all core offset of -30 and temp limit of 85c and it runs perfectly.

Wondering if anyone has experience with using PBO and curve optimizer with the 7800x3d. I’ve went-30 nothing happens. Boost clock offset nothing happens. Manual Thermal limit nothing happens.

I spent hours messing with these settings and always get 18500-18600 in cinebench. 18605 was my highest. Pulls around 87w. 4.919mhz max boost.

I’ve seen some say this is normal but watching online people are making huge drops in watts.

If I’m stupid just tell me. Coming from 8700k. That’s the last year I built a pc. Never had amd. Thanks.

Are those scores stock? For some reason I cant get my 18xxx score I had on my first chip on my second chip. Maybe its silicon lottery but I did do similar settings with -30/35 and memory speed back up to 6000

what I've tested myself, pbo has a minimal effect on temperatures and power consumption, at least in cinebench. I personally use pbo all core -30, temp limit 80c and this gives me the best score 18740. cinebench boost all cores up to 4.9ghz, for some reason they don't want to raise it higher, no matter what I try to do. in other programs pbo helped like occt/prime clock speed increased from 4.4ghz to 4.7ghz and in games boost 5.05ghz.
