r/StarWars on Reddit: Why were the sequels (7,8,9) such a disaster?
February 20, 2022 -

Not trying to wind anybody up but genuinely haven’t ever heard a satisfactory answer to this. With Clone Wars, Rebels, the books, Filoni, etc. they had the machine in place to really put out something true to fans and coherent across three films. As well as the money to seemingly not be pushed into hammering out TRoS after the director swap/re-write.

If Marvel can steer a dozen plus films over more than a decade to culminate into End Game, why didn’t Star Wars have a big, grand plan for the sequels before filming started? Or did they and it all just got thrown out?

Again, not intending to rant but genuinely curious what people better informed than me have to say as to how things turned out they way they did. Thanks!

I think one of the biggest problems was the lack of a planned storyarc for the course of the 3 movies. When watching 7-9 it seems like each director kind of "did their own thing" with each film and the story arc suffered as a result.

The common answer is a lack of a unified vision and a less common answer is that the CEO of Disney rushed ep. 9 to a Christmas release and while I don't think those are wrong, I think what really deflated the sequels was a lack of anything meaningful to say. For all the shit they get, the prequels had a lot to say about the trap of complacency, the harm apathy does, and how easily democracies fall. The classics had a great deal to say about the size of the fight in the dog, the trap of arrogance the potential for redemption. The sequels basically started and ended with "here's the story everyone loves... but with a new generation this time!" They nodded in the direction of themes from the prequels and classics, but failed to elaborate on any of them any better than the previous films had. The second act might have had something useful to say in legends being a trap, failure being the best teacher and lineage being unimportant, if those statements weren't dropped or flatly contradicted in the third act. Past the amazing visuals and phenomenal music we already know they're capable of, a film should make a statement--about the world or a feeling or both--it's the ones that do that usually stand the test of time. The sequels captured the aesthetic and pretty colors what wow audiences... but didn't really add anything. But that doesn't mean episode 10 is hopeless.
