Amazon's PIP - Lessons from 75+ clients
A PIP at Amazon outlines specific performance deficiencies, suggests corrective actions, and sets measurable objectives that the employee needs to meet within a specified time frame, usually 30 or 60 days. A PIP/Pivot often usually comes with an opportunity to voluntarily quit and receive a higher severance package.

February 3, 2024 - Take the payout and move on. PIPs have a low success rate, like 7%, same success rate as treating pancreatic cancer. Most who are put on them, the situation has nothing to do with performance.

Amazon Pivot Program Lawyer – Representation for Employees Facing Performance Measures
January 6, 2022 - I have a very good success rate in helping Amazon employee clients assess their choices, and have supported multiple employees through successful Appeals, while guiding many more to manage the end of their employment on favorable terms, or negotiate upwards from the severance package that is offered. Be aware that negotiating upwards from the tier one package always includes a demand by Amazon that you agree not to return. Of course, the existence of the PIP or Pivot or development plan is also likely to hinder your future employment and advancement at Amazon, in which case acceptance of a severance package may be the best option.
People also ask

What is Amazon's Pivot Program?
Amazon's Pivot Program claims to be designed to address underperformance. Over time, it offers employees three options:  Voluntary Resignation with Severance: Employees can choose to resign and receive a severance package.  Performance Improvement Plan (PIP): Employees commit to meeting specific performance goals within a set timeframe. If the manager says they do not meet the goals the severance package is smaller.  Peer Panel Review: If the manager claims the PIP (called Pivot) is unsuccessful, employees can appeal their manager's assessment through a peer review process.

Will participating in the Pivot Program impact my professional reputation at Amazon or future job opportunities?
Being placed in the Pivot Program can affect internal mobility at Amazon. Employees may find it harder to transfer teams, and future hiring managers may see the participation as a red flag. Successfully completing the PIP or proactively securing another role can help mitigate reputational risks if not repeated.

What are the potential outcomes of the Pivot Program?
Depending on the chosen path and its outcome, employees may:  Continue Employment: Successfully meet PIP objectives or win the peer review. In some cases employees are offered a period of time to find other work within Amazon instead of staying in the same position.  Voluntarily Resign: Opt for severance and leave the company. The payment for promising not to sue gets smaller at each stage of the Pivot process.  Involuntary Termination: Fail to meet PIP goals and lose the peer review appeal.

r/amazonemployees on Reddit: Experience with Pivot
December 6, 2023 -

Long story short, I am being entered into Pivot. I more than likely will be taking the Leave option as I no longer feel that my org is a place I’d want to continue working, but I wanted to hear if anyone has any advice or can share their experience if they fought a Pivot.

To be clear, I don’t want to fight the pivot even if the rationale provided is dubious at best. If anything, I’d like to negotiate up the number despite the letter advising it is non-negotiable. I have been with the company nearly two years, and I have a lot of invested RSUs and my sign on bonus for my salary ends in July.

For context, I went on a medical leave in October. When I had left, I was under no sort of focus review. Myself, along with 75% of managers in our org were moved into an individual contributor role in June of last year, and I had been meeting all metrics.

When I returned from leave at the end of October, I was apparently placed on Focus. This wasn’t obvious to me as I was also moved teams and was under the impression the increased 1:1s were for the transition.

The timing of this all seems suspicious, and the rationale for the pivot is flawed if not outright incorrect in some areas, but I no longer want to work here. Is there any merit to getting a lawyer? Have you gone through pivot or know people who have? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

November 27, 2023 - And look, I'm not going to say you're going to ever find this somewhere, locked down in words. But the idea is, if you're putting somebody in Pivot, you make that so damn hard that they don't get out. Almost always, unless there was some really unique set of situations where it came out during the appeal, the success rate of that was virtually none.

Amazon sharply upped ‘performance improvement plans’ for workers. Then came tens of thousands of layoffs
March 20, 2024 - A PIP, like those issued by Amazon, in and of itself isn’t a sign of “quiet firing” or of an effort to force workers out. The Amazon documents don’t reveal how many employees successfully completed the PIP, nor how many of those on PIPs were among the people laid off in the job cuts from 2022 to early 2023.

April 2, 2025 - Amazon wisely balances innovation with established industry expectations by adopting a 45-day theatrical window before some of its films move to streaming. Rather than disrupting the system, they’re working within it, while still advancing their streaming goals. When entering new markets or transforming operations, the most successful pivots honor stakeholder expectations while introducing just enough innovation to create competitive advantage.

It's somewhat widely known that Amazon has a firing quota. The quota is officially called URA quota, UnRegretted Attrition, and is officially at exactly 6% company-wide. However, that 6% is the official "success" rate target.
