Is there a complete wiki/infographic guide to choosing an AMD cpu?
If you want something to explain the desktop: first number = gen. 1-5 is AM4, >7 is AM5 Eg: 5xxx is zen 3 and on AM4, 7xxx is zen 4 and on AM5 (Exceptions: 4xxx is garbage, 6xxx has been skipped, 8xxx are just laptop zen 4 CPUs with decent IGPU’s for too much money) I wouldn’t go anything lower than ryzen 3000. If possible, I would get AM5 for the platform longevity. I would also wait till August 15th for ryzen 8000 to at least drop prices on older CPU’s. Second number = tier. Typically means more cores or faster per cores Eg. 76xx has 6 cores, 77xx has 8 cores. For gaming, go for x6xx if you are more on a budget(we will get into the best gaming CPUs later). For productivity, go for the biggest number possible for moar cores. Third and forth numbers: fluff numbers Time for letters: X = slightly more expensive and slightly faster versions of the normal versions. Also, may not include the loud stock cooler. Also sometimes the only options G = has a decent IGPU. Are just reheated laptop GPU’s and slower than desktop CPUs(5600g is much slower than 5600(x)) Exception: Ryzen 7000+(excluding ones with and F designation) have some shitty IGPUS good enough to turn on the system and do debugging. X3D = has more cache. You don’t need to know what that means, all you need to know is that is provides basically next gen gaming performance at the cost of some productivity losses.(5800x3d ~ 7700(x)) Exception: 7800x3d has 8 3d vcache cores(8 gaming cores). 7900x3d has 6 3d vcache cores(6 gaming cores) and 6 normal(productivity cores)cores. 7950x3d has 8 3d vcache cores, and 8 normal cores. Tldr: Super budget: 3600(x) Budget: 5600(x), 5600g if you don’t have a gpu Mid range: 7500f(only on aliexpress), 7600(x), 7700(x) High end: 7800x3d(gaming), 7950x(productivity), 7950x3d(best of both worlds) Hopes this mess helps you. If you have any questions, ask away! I would also go ask for help on r/buildapcforme More on reddit.com

Can someone explain the Ryzen ecosystem to me?
tl;dr - do some quick googling to learn about the various chips you're interested in. the higher the number theoretically the better performance but there are some more specifics... X3D chips are targeted as single thread/gaming performance chips, with the 7800X3D currently the best gaming CPU by far. a 7950 is better than a 7600 in terms of overall processor performance for a few reasons, those two are in the same 'generation' of chips. the 5800X3D is the previous generation of AMD's dominant gaming chip but its still plenty viable and out-performs other current generation chips in gaming performance. Is there a simple AM5 CPU list?
7000 and 9000 is zen 4 and zen 5 respectively, 8000G being the zen 4 APUs. All 7000, 8000 and 9000 (with the exception of the F cpus) have a built-in igpu. 7000 and 9000 igpu is just a 2 CU pixel pusher and can't be trusted to do anything beyond displaying them desktop, 8000G ones have the extra oomph. Think of these as laptop APUs on desktop form factor. X suffix is for higher performance chips, F for cpus without igpu, x3d denotes existance of V-cache. Ryzen 3 isn't available at the time, but it's the entry level. Haven't seen one since the 3300x and the 3100? Ryzen 5 is the hexacore cpus. Mainstream mostly. Ryzen 7 is the octacore cpus, these tend to be the sweetspot for gaming performance while being able to do some productivity on the side. Ryzen 9 is the top of the line cpus, more geared for productivity. It is comprised by 12 and 16-core cpus. All are overclockable, with the exception of the 7000 series x3d CPUs, I think. February 27, 2024 - Fourth Generation: AMD Ryzen 5000 CPUs, 7nm Zen 3 architecture (November 2020) Rather than using Zen, Zen 2, Zen 3, etc. AMD chose to name its second-generation Zen+. The family of processors is denoted by the ‘Ryzen’ branding which is similar to how Intel uses ‘Core’. There is also a number affixed to the name where the higher you go, the more cores and processing power you get: Ryzen 3: Quad-core processors primarily used for budget-friendly PCs.

Answer (1 of 10): “It’s more than Ryzen 3, 5 or 7.” It’s more than “i5–12th Gen” as well. An i5 12th gen CPU for high-power desktop PCs can be more than twice as fast in some tasks as one for low-power laptops. You should compare CPU performance based on specific model names (e.g. ...

r/pcmasterrace on Reddit: Is there a complete wiki/infographic guide to choosing an AMD cpu?
July 30, 2024 -

As the title suggests, I’ve been planning to build a PC with an AMD cpu after the recent shenanigans with Intel’s latest cpu. I’ve been using Intel for about 20 years, so switching to AMD is quite new for me. Understanding their CPU naming scheme is quite… confusing. Unlike Intel, some of the letters are used in strange ways, and there are also a Threadripper variants with more cores? While they use similar numbering to Intel, such as Ryzen 5, 7, and 9, the letters at the end of the numbers and the numbering for versions or cpu make it confusing for me. And I also found out that some of the cpu have the word ‘Pro’ and some don’t.

On the other hand, their naming scheme for mobile CPUs is much more understandable to me, as they use similar naming conventions to Intel, with HX being the highest and U for low power.
