I have never invested in CDs, but I was curious if anybody has and if the guaranteed rate of 4.5% APY for the next five years makes sense factoring in inflation and the opportunity cost of floating the money for that period of time. Would I be better off putting that same amount of money into the stock market with the S&P or a high yield dividend?
Fidelity’s CD Finder has rates higher then that, mattering on duration 4.7-5 can be found. I have cash parked in some on a ladder. It is a very solid no risk return, but not a great inflation adjusted return. I think it makes a lot of sense for this to be the ‘cash’ portion of your portfolio- so 10-50% of your holdings mattering on your risk profile.
Personally, I am waiting to see how the market plays out a bit and earning 5% is not a bad place to be. Keep durations short as it looks like rate hikes will continue which means will see even higher CD rates by end of year.
It really depends on your use for the money.
Need it again in 5-8 years….yea makes sense (look at tbills for no state taxes)
Is this all retirement money 15+ years…..throw it in S&P and walk away
