r/techsupport on Reddit: How do I STOP Android from killing my background apps?
December 2, 2022 -

Hi r/techsupport,

Long story short, I cannot listen to music or be on any phone calls while using my Android phone. The second I try to do anything else, like browse the web or open a different app, my call or music is suddenly killed. I've tried changing my battery settings and putting certain apps in "don't put to sleep" and have had no success. This is really aggravating when I'm on phone calls or want to listen to music while using my phone. Does anyone know how to definitively stop this?

Thanks!

May 16, 2025 - Select Manage apps & device. Go into Updates available. Hit Update all (if available). Android 10 introduced excellent power management features that limit background apps and extend your phone’s battery life. One of them is called Adaptive Battery, which uses machine learning to figure out which apps you’ll use in the next few hours, and which ones you won’t use until later, if at all, that day.

Why do Android apps run in the background?

Apps running in the background is an essential feature in the Android ecosystem. This allows the phone to work backstage while you’re doing other things. You can keep a web page loading while you check Facebook, for example. As such, this allows for better multitasking.

Are there any apps you should let run in the background, even if they drain the battery?

It all depends on which apps are important to you. If you rely on Facebook for work, for example, stopping it from running in the background isn’t a viable option. Additionally, stopping system apps from running in the background can affect performance and functionality.

January 22, 2024 - The assumption here is that one cannot prevent Android from restarting apps in the background without rooting the device, but one can keep force-closing them the moment they are launched. For better motivation, one (out of several) use cases for me is terminating Samsung's infamous Game Optimizing Service (GOS), which cannot be uninstalled even via adb as it gets immediately reinstalled (reminiscent to malware). When terminated by the user, it gets restarted after several minutes. An appropriate task killing app would automate the termination process for the user and ensure that GOS is running only for a miniscule fraction of system run time.
