Series 4 needs to go into the hall of fame for Apple devices. first Watch to hone in the design and work as advertised imo. and it just. kept. going. after every update it still ran like it did the day I bought it. granted, it’s a smartwatch, but still. the only hit I noticed over the years was battery usage, but even then I could always get a full day out of it, just no longer the 2-2.5 I could get from before. was very impressed with the five years I wore mine and wouldn’t have upgraded had it not been for lack of new software. this was the Watch that figured out what the Apple Watch wanted to be. I have a Series 9 now and fundamentally it’s really not that huge of leap design wise or feature wise besides the always-on display and DoubleTap. I guess the keyboard function is also new, but I used to have an awesome keyboard app on my S0 and S4 that I can’t remember the name of that I used constantly until Apple killed it. I’m looking to get an Apple Watch more for email, text message & fitness (step tracking & heart rate). I am on a budget don’t want to spend a ton and don’t need brand new so I am looking at the series 4 secondhand but I know they are not making anymore upgrades for it but does this really matter or is it more so if I want all the newer stuff? I pretty much just want basics so I’m thinking it would be ok but what are your thoughts?

Don't buy a 6 year old smart watch. You're going to be very close, if not already at, end of life in regards to software updates. As soon as the battery goes dead, if you pay to have it replaced, you'll be close to the cost difference of a newer version. Get the SE 2 at least and you'll be happy you don't have to deal with the quirks of the 4.
