In French, arrondissement is a noun often numbered within a city (e.g., Paris 1er, 2e, 3e, etc.). The abbreviation "ème" (more properly written "e" or "ᵉ" after a numeral) derives from the abbreviation of ordinal adjectives and pronouns formed from the masculine/feminine endings "-ième" in modern French.
