Both Avira and BitDefender are reputable companies and are regularly tested by testing agencies. Keep in mind when people give their negative opinions and experiences, they do count for something. But corporations with large baskets of money, resources and research time also use enterprise versions of their AV products. If Avira and BitDefender are trash products, that would not happen. Same thing happened last Spring & I signed up for Avira trial thinking it would be more secure. Instead, I ran into all manner of headaches and the VPN was giving me trouble signing on to my utility company and other sites that are perfectly secure. I wound up having to spend more than 2 weeks figuring out how to reset my computer. Needless to say, I ended my free trial of Avira and I wouldn’t even consider paying for a subscription unless they clear up the problem with the free service!

If anyone has recently used the free version of Avira, please tell me your opinions. PS: it doesn't have web protection. It only has real-time protection. Isn't that ok? Even defender doesn't have web protection.
Edit: why I'm not using defender:
My pc no longer shuts down when fast startup is turned on. It was caused by an update. When I re installed the os the problem disappeared. I don't want windows updates to mess up my pc. So I disabled the update service. I want to keep updates disabled for atleast 3 months so that the problem might get fixed. In the intervening period I want to use another antivirus, because I won't be updating defender.
