I’ve actually done over 50 interviews for cloud support engineer roles, and you don’t actually have to have any AWS knowledge coming into the role (they do love to see that you have tried to learn AWS in between applying and your interview, as this goes to the “Learn and Be Curios” LP). You’ll apply for a specific ‘profile’ like Linux, Networking, Windows, Database, Deployment, etc. If applying for one of the core profiles like Linux or Networking, you’ll need to meet the bar in technical knowledge in that area. If they feel that you have a good foundation, then they can teach you everything you need to know about how AWS works. So say your applying for the Networking profile; this is my biggest suggestion: don’t focus on AWS specific knowledge such as how VPCs work, or public vs private subjects, endpoints, etc. They won’t ask you about any of that. They will test for foundational networking knowledge that is situation based and focuses on troubleshooting something that you have little visibility into (which is exactly what you will be doing). Hello guys just got my first call back at aws and im really excited. Just wanted to ask if anyone had any tips for that specific role. i think its a L5 role im told so maybe it wont be as technical? but just want to give a brief overview of myself and what I currently know about the interview process before you give me advice.
ABOUT ME: Currently work in level 2 IT Support. doing hardware and software fixes and have been for like 5 years now so i have alot of customer support experience. I recently got my Cloud practioner cert and my solutions architect associate cert recently and am very proud of that because it took me ages to revise for due to struggling with ADHD but i had plenty of help from THIS SUB ;)
After getting those certs I did a few of Adrian Cantrils AWS projects such as; BGP highly avaliable site to site vpn connecting a hybrid on prem network to AWS, creating a serverless reminder notification app, creating a serverless event driven app, hosting a containerised web app with docker. I have also done some other projects with cloud tools like terraform (deploying a vpn and ec2's), Ansible(deploying a web app to multiple ec2's) and a python project where I used boto3 to make a basic image automation function. (cURRENTLY In the middle of creating a ci/cd pipeline with github actions with my mentor).
WHAT I KNOW ABOUT THE PROCESS: to my knowledge there will be like 5-6 interview that may be around 1 hour which kind of sounds daunting to me. I know the first interview process will be either "functional skills, technical aptitude and amazon leadership principles. would like some clarity on what all of those could entail to be honest. BUT yeah thats pretty much all I know.
My question to you was how can I prepare? what was your experience interviewing with aWS? What is the structure of interviews like? is the role im applying to more forgiving if im abit less technical?
I just have abit of anxiety about it all tbh and want to know how best to prepare!

I think you sound well prepared, but your understanding of CSA and the interview process is a bit off. I was hired as a CSA in March 2022. CSA/CSE is an L4 position. They accepted my resume and a few weeks later I was invited to take a quiz about the basics like networking, routing, managing my time, etc. About a day later I was offered the ability to schedule two 1 hour interviews. One of the interviews focused on behavioral questions/leadership principals. The next hour was focused solely on Technical. Think A+/Network+ questions. Subnetting, basic SQL, what’s IaC, what is EC2, Saas or Iaas? Essentially Cloud Practitioner questions that focused on technical understanding but not necessarily directly deep in AWS. Many of the people who were hired as CSAs had never even logged into the console. I had completed SAA before being hired so it was a fairly smooth interview. About 3 days later I got the offer letter. CSAs will have a 3 or 4 month onboarding time, then ramp up in their workload to the point where you may become a CSE depending on performance. You can expect the jump from CSA -> CSE to come with a double digit salary and TC increase, yet still and L4 position. CSEII is L5.

The best advice I can give you is to study the leadership principles. At Amazon, it’s not just a subset of words written on a wall. The LPs are engrained into how Amazonians work and talk every day. They are also used as a part of the interviewing process for evaluating candidates. Some other general tips I can give are: Be quick to say you don’t know something, capture the question in your notes, and follow up. Words matter at Amazon, be very clear. This also translates to the definition of services offered. I would go as far as to study the re:invent keynotes delivered by Andy Jassy to pick up on the specific vernacular. Don’t use “filler” words like very, best, most, etc. Be specific, use metrics instead of generalizations. This helps to build trust. Be prepared to respond to the STAR method. Think of a situation where you’ve exemplified each of the LPs. Write them down, and bring them in with you. Try to guess what LP each interviewer is trying to evaluate you on. Ask the interviewer what their favorite LP is and which they struggle with, and why. Ask if they have written a 1 pager or 6 pager. What was it about? Overall, be genuine and honest. Amazon has extensive training that will help build the depth and breadth you need to be successful in your job.
